Within the urban fabric of Rio de Janeiro, the Itaúna House exemplifies the potential of sensitive expansion and adaptive reuse. Originally a compact design by Oscar Niemeyer, the project, realized by Siqueira+Azul, orchestrates a dialogue between the existing structure and a newly acquired adjacent plot. This intervention not only expands the dwelling but also reconfigures the urban context, establishing a harmonious interplay of architectural languages and a revitalized landscape.

The key to the transformation lies in the creation of a lush garden, defined by striking vertical and horizontal lines that extend the living space outwards. This expansion is further emphasized by a new leisure annex, a striking horizontal plane that appears to hover between the pool and the garden, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living.

The project is conceived as three distinct yet interconnected structures, linked by a network of passages, walkways, and stairs. This interconnectedness fosters a sense of flow and integration throughout the property, encouraging exploration and discovery. The interior of the original Niemeyer house has been carefully adapted to accommodate a new way of living, respecting its heritage while embracing contemporary needs.

One of the most striking features of the renovation is the addition of large pivoting panels to the façades of the main existing blocks. These panels, made possible by a custom-designed iron square mesh structural system, provide a dynamic element to the architecture, allowing for flexible control of light, ventilation, and privacy. A long, continuous bench further blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, tracing the edges of the slabs and creating a sense of continuity.

The architects have also introduced a circular oculus, acting as both an observation point and a source of natural light, offering a glimpse into the upper courtyard. A helical staircase leads to a tower element, equipped with large sliding glass panels that provide panoramic views of the surrounding area. This vertical circulation adds another dimension to the experience of the house, offering a sense of ascent and discovery.

The leisure annex, a focal point of the expansion, is constructed using natural materials such as stone and concrete. The design cleverly utilizes variations in planes and material finishes to define spaces while maintaining an overall aesthetic continuity. This approach creates a sense of both separation and connection, allowing each area to have its own distinct character while remaining part of a cohesive whole.

The Itaúna House is more than just a renovation; it’s a conversation between architectural eras. Siqueira+Azul have skillfully woven together the legacy of Oscar Niemeyer with a contemporary vision, creating a home that is both respectful of its past and fully engaged with the present. The result is a stunning urban oasis, a testament to the transformative power of architecture and design.
