In the heart of Paris‘s Montmartre, at the vibrant intersection of Rue des Martyrs and Rue André Gill, Simple Coffee Paris invites patrons to experience a unique blend of old and new. Designed by Mur Mur Architects, the coffee shop masterfully juxtaposes the area’s rich heritage with a bold, contemporary interior.
The architects were careful to preserve the building’s original corner storefront, complete with its intricate moldings, reflective mirrors, and robust stone pillars. The large bay windows, fitted with removable glass louvers, invite natural light to flood the space while offering passersby a glimpse of the striking interior.
Inside, the single-room layout reveals a captivating interplay between old and new. The kitchen, tucked away downstairs and accessible via a steel spiral staircase, allows the main floor to focus on the customer experience. The counter, strategically placed against the storefront, becomes a stage for the baristas’ artistry, while the seating is arranged along the back walls, providing patrons with a sense of privacy.
Every piece of furniture in Simple Coffee Paris was custom-made for the project. The material palette is intentionally restrained, featuring natural concrete coating and strategically placed mirrors that seem to dematerialize the structural posts. A striking neon light installation, reminiscent of classic Parisian cafes, wraps around the room, adding a touch of nostalgia.
Mur Mur Architects drew inspiration from the building itself, aiming to respect its history while introducing a modern, almost brutalist aesthetic. The standout feature is undoubtedly the seating, crafted from bent stainless steel sheets using techniques originally developed for grain silos. These rounded alcoves, or “silos” as the architects call them, provide intimate and comfortable spaces for customers to relax and enjoy their coffee.
Above each alcove, a removable disc acts as a reflector, allowing each visitor to customize the light from the neon installation and create their own personal atmosphere. This thoughtful design ensures that customers enjoy both comfort and privacy while still being able to observe the lively street scene outside.
Simple Coffee Paris is more than just a place to grab a coffee; it’s an experience. The café’s design fosters a dialogue between the past and the present, the intimate and the public, the raw and the refined. It’s a space where one can simultaneously escape the hustle of the city and remain connected to its vibrant energy.
Mur Mur Architects have created a space that is both timeless and of its time, a true reflection of the dynamic spirit of Montmartre.
