Daipu Architects’ Streaming Light: Metal Mesh and Rural Revival in Xi’an

Daipu Architects' Streaming Light: Metal Mesh and Rural Revival in Xi'an

Wu Qingshan

The rural landscape of China is undergoing a fascinating transformation, and at the heart of this evolution lies a renewed appreciation for culture and community. In the village of Caijiapo, nestled north of the majestic Qinling Mountains, Daipu Architects have unveiled the Streaming Light Exhibition Hall, a project born from the 2023 Guanzhong Mangba Art Festival. This initiative, a first for architects as exhibitors, sought to breathe new life into an existing courtyard, transforming it into a vibrant cultural hub.

The site presented both challenges and opportunities. An abandoned kitchen and a dilapidated warehouse formed the existing structure, plagued by seasonal waterlogging. Daipu Architects saw this as a chance to not only address these practical issues but also to inject a sense of wonder and connection into the village. Their response is a clear demonstration of the power of thoughtful design to revitalize and inspire.

Drawing inspiration from the undulating tile roofs that characterize the local vernacular, the architects conceived a facade that mimics the graceful flow of a curtain. Wave-shaped metal mesh elements cascade down the sloping roof, creating a dynamic texture that plays with light and shadow. This “curtain” is not merely aesthetic; it’s a functional element that guides rainwater, a critical consideration in a region prone to heavy summer downpours.

The entrance to the exhibition hall is marked by a circular passage, a subtle invitation to explore the courtyard’s northern expanse. This passage serves a dual purpose: it acts as a threshold, transitioning visitors from the familiar to the new, and it activates the wave-shaped metal mesh curtain. As visitors traverse the passage, the curtain rotates, revealing a series of paving lines that function as a sophisticated rainwater drainage system. This ingenious design transforms a practical necessity into an engaging visual experience, seamlessly integrating functionality and artistry.

The Streaming Light Exhibition Hall is more than just a building; it’s a catalyst for community engagement. By transforming a neglected space into a cultural destination, Daipu Architects have provided the village of Caijiapo with a new focal point. The hall serves as a platform for exhibitions, workshops, and gatherings, fostering a sense of shared identity and creative expression.

In a region where the past and present intertwine, the Streaming Light Exhibition Hall stands as a beacon of innovation and respect. It demonstrates how contemporary architecture can harmonize with traditional forms, creating spaces that are both functional and evocative. This project is a testament to the power of architecture to not only shelter but also to inspire, connect, and revitalize. In the heart of rural Xi’an, Daipu Architects have crafted a space where light streams, stories unfold, and community thrives.
