Casa Escaleta by Goodbye2000 Balances Heritage and Modernity in Valencia Renovation

Escaleta House by Goodbye2000: Valencia’s Heritage Meets Modern Design

Oleh Kardash

Nestled in l’Horta Sud, Valencia, the Escaleta House by Goodbye2000 is a masterclass in blending historical charm with contemporary design. Accessed via a narrow staircase—a common feature in the area’s single-family homes—this century-old dwelling has been transformed into a fluid, light-filled sanctuary for a young couple. The project reimagines the home’s original compartmentalized layout, uncovering hidden architectural gems while introducing modern interventions that celebrate its past.

During renovations, the team discovered the home’s sloped wooden structure beneath false ceilings, a revelation that reshaped the entire spatial approach. The exposed beams, supporting the traditional Arabic tile roof, became a defining feature, adding warmth and texture to the interiors. Similarly, beneath layers of ceramic flooring, original hydraulic tiles were found—their geometric patterns and earthy tones inspiring the material palette throughout the home.

The open-plan living area is the heart of the house, with the kitchen serving as a central hub for daily life. The bedrooms, placed at opposite ends, ensure privacy without sacrificing the home’s airy, interconnected feel. A newly added spiral staircase, juxtaposed against a restored exposed brick wall, leads to a rooftop terrace, extending the living space outdoors and enhancing the sense of openness.

Rather than erasing the past, Goodbye2000 highlights it. Original elements like wooden beams, a double-leaf door, and window railings are preserved, creating a dialogue between old and new. The result is a home that feels both timeless and fresh—a seamless fusion of memory and modernity.
