Nearly two decades after creating an instant SoHo sensation, Heatherwick Studio has returned to transform Longchamp’s La Maison Unique boutique at 132 Spring Street. This flagship store redesign in Manhattan breathes new life into the Parisian fashion house’s iconic downtown space, blending architectural storytelling with heritage preservation in a bold reimagining of luxury retail.

Originally unveiled in 2006 as Longchamp’s 100th global boutique, the location became a downtown landmark celebrated for its theatrical, sculptural staircase. Heatherwick’s 2025 revival honours that legacy while injecting fresh dynamism. The undisputed centerpiece remains the studio’s undulating staircase, now dramatically re-lined in Longchamp’s iconic green.

Constructed from 30 ribbons of hot-rolled steel, this functional sculpture evokes a “gentle promenade,” guiding visitors through the 9,000-square-foot space like a curated journey. The redesign deliberately blurs lines between commerce and living, cultivating an atmosphere closer to a welcoming apartment than a traditional shop.

Housed within a 1936 industrial loft, the Heatherwick Studio design masterfully balances old and new. Original exposed brick walls and maple flooring anchor the space, while contemporary interventions include sculptural oak furniture by David Nash, sinuous custom pieces by Heatherwick, and a playful vintage croissant-shaped sofa by Raphaël Raffel. Swirling green rugs cascade from carpeted columns, suggesting spilled paint frozen mid-motion—a nod to the neighbourhood’s artistic grit.

Playful details punctuate the immersive environment: neon signage glows alongside graffiti artwork by André, while Longchamp’s luminous equestrian logo casts an ambient gleam. Strategically opened sightlines flood the boutique with natural light and frame expansive views of bustling Spring Street, encouraging guests to linger. This experiential approach reflects Heatherwick Studio’s deep-rooted collaboration with Longchamp, which began in 2004 with the iconic Zip Bag and birthed the original store concept.

Reopened on May 20, 2025, the La Maison Unique boutique reaffirms SoHo as a nexus of design innovation and retail experience. By transforming a historic landmark into a vibrant contemporary destination, Heatherwick Studio proves that visionary architecture can honour heritage while forging uncharted aesthetic territory—one green ribbon of steel at a time.
