In the heart of Santander, northern Spain, a distinguished private contemporary art collection has found a new, profoundly serene home. Designed by the acclaimed Carbajo Hermanos – Andrea and Galo Carbajo, known for their collaborations with Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofía and Spain’s leading cultural institutions – the Colección ES Headquarters transcends the typical gallery or office space. This meticulous renovation transforms approximately 600 square meters into a multi-faceted haven for art, work, and meaningful gathering, all orchestrated within a refined, minimalist composition.

Conceived for a prominent businessman and passionate collector, the project demanded a space that could fluidly accommodate the display of a significant contemporary art collection, function as a sophisticated office, and serve as a welcoming venue for meetings and social encounters. Carbajo Hermanos masterfully balanced these diverse needs. The layout dedicates substantial areas to exhibition, seamlessly integrating them with essential support spaces: a dedicated art storage room, private and guest restrooms, a functional kitchen with an adjacent dining area for hospitality, and an office strategically positioned to overlook one of Santander’s characteristic inner courtyards.

The architects’ genius lies in dissolving boundaries. Practical zones like the kitchen, bathrooms, and storage are not isolated but subtly connected to the gallery space through a recurring architectural motif: square glass partitions framed in a soft pink hue. This elegant solution maintains an unbroken visual connection throughout the headquarters. Artworks remain a constant presence, while everyday activities within these functional rooms – preparing a meal, a quiet moment – become framed vignettes, curated moments indistinguishable from the collection itself. Life, quite literally, enters the gallery frame.

The underlying order of the Colección ES Headquarters reveals deeper inspirations. The layout adheres to a strict geometric logic based on Cartesian axes, a thoughtful homage to the collector’s background in mathematics. Simultaneously, the profound influence of Japanese architecture – stemming from the architects’ early professional experience in Tokyo – permeates the space. This is felt not just in the project’s calm, restrained atmosphere, but fundamentally in the use of the square module as the foundational element shaping the entire architectural composition. The result is a quiet rhythm that structures the environment.

A predominantly white palette establishes a pristine, contemplative backdrop for the art, softened with deliberate, subtle accents: grey flooring, the distinctive pink-framed glass partitions, light blue furnishings, and warm birch wood ceilings gracing smaller rooms. Carbajo Hermanos describes this carefully curated selection as reflecting both their own emotional connection to the coastal city of Santander, where they spent their childhood, and the gentle, almost childlike perspective of a collector deeply engaged with living artists.

More than just rooms, the Colección ES Headquarters is conceived as a stage for art and human connection. Every architectural decision by Carbajo Hermanos contributes to an atmosphere that is serene, thoughtfully structured, and purposeful. It is a unique Santander art space where the appreciation of contemporary masterpieces, focused work, and warm social interaction discover a natural and inspiring balance. Here, within a framework of mathematical precision and Japanese-inspired tranquility, life and art gracefully intersect.
