Tucked away within the inner courtyard of a peripheral Madrid neighborhood, a forgotten piece of the city’s industrial past has been reborn as a beacon of contemporary creativity. Nave Maravilla, a transformative project by Día Uno Architecture, sees a dilapidated 1950s mechanical workshop meticulously reimagined into a stunning, hybrid art studio, proving the potent potential of sensitive industrial heritage rehabilitation.
The starting point was quintessentially mid-century: a warehouse defined by its robust concrete structure and distinctive pitched roof, hallmarks of its era. Years of neglect had taken a toll, leaving the roof and original flooring in significant disrepair. Día Uno Architecture‘s core premise, however, was one of reverence: enhance the original construction while minimizing structural interventions. The vision was a pristine “white container” that celebrated, rather than erased, the building’s inherent history and texture.
The restoration process was fundamental. After essential dampness treatment, the walls were painted white, carefully preserving their original, time-worn texture. The damaged floor was replaced with a seamless continuous microcement pavement. This choice not only repaired but unified the space, generating a powerful sense of fluidity and spatial continuity that visually amplifies the existing concrete skeleton. The result is a luminous canvas where light plays across raw surfaces.
The interior metamorphosis was driven by the needs of its new occupant – a multidisciplinary artist requiring a hybrid space. Día Uno Architecture‘s ingenious solution was to introduce a singular, freestanding volume crafted from birch wood and glass panels, strategically positioned at the warehouse’s heart. This central element is the project’s masterstroke. It deliberately breaks the orthogonal rigidity of the industrial shell, injecting dynamism and elegantly articulating the program.
One side of this luminous birch-and-glass box houses a private, intimate art studio, flooded with natural light – an ideal sanctuary for creation. The opposite side opens into a versatile, adaptable zone. Here, a simple white curtain provides the flexibility to instantly create an isolated, monochrome box perfect for projections or focused work. This central volume effortlessly organizes the wider plan, which also incorporates a kitchen, office area, access to a patio, and essential service spaces.
Aesthetic coherence binds the entire project. Carefully chosen finishes flow seamlessly from interior to facade. Striking blue metalwork details offer vibrant accents against the white backdrop. Custom-designed birch plywood furniture echoes the central volume’s materiality, while thoughtfully selected tiles act as further visual threads. These elements create a unified language, ensuring every corner of Nave Maravilla feels intrinsically connected.
