The intersection of high-concept fashion technology and minimalist consumer electronics has produced a fascinating new object: the iPhone Pocket. Unveiled today by ISSEY MIYAKE and Apple, the accessory reimagines the relationship between device and user, moving beyond a standard case to become a flexible, wearable design element. Drawing directly from the Japanese brand’s philosophy of A Piece of Cloth (A-POC), the singular 3D-knitted construction is engineered to fit all iPhone models, alongside essential pocketable items, offering a seemingly simple yet technologically advanced solution for carrying tech. This collaboration champions a shared commitment to sophisticated simplicity and delight in craftsmanship.

Illustrating its versatile, hands-free function, the iPhone Pocket’s unique, flexible shape integrates seamlessly as a piece of wearable tech.

The design studio, known globally for its iconic pleats and boundary-pushing textile innovation, developed the iPhone Pocket with a ribbed, open structure that is both highly stretchable and structurally sound. This subtle open textile expands under tension to securely envelop the iPhone, only partially revealing its contents and, crucially, allowing the user to view the device’s display without full removal. The concept elevates the everyday utility of a simple pocket, transforming it through technology into an elegant and almost sculptural accessory.

A core element of the iPhone Pocket is its functional versatility. It is not merely a cover, but a piece of wearable techthat can be effortlessly integrated into various lifestyles: carried handheld, tied onto a bag, or worn directly on the body using the straps. The playful, extensive colour palette further encourages personalization and expression. The short strap design is available in eight vibrant colours—including lemon, mandarin, and peacock—while the long strap is offered in three deeper tones such as cinnamon and sapphire, all deliberately selected to mix and match with any iPhone model or colour.

The Head of the MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO, Yoshiyuki Miyamae, highlighted the ethos behind the launch, stating the design explores “the concept of ‘the joy of wearing iPhone in your own way.’” He noted that the product’s simplicity mirrors the studio’s practice of “leaving things less defined to allow for possibilities and personal interpretation.” This sentiment is echoed by Apple’s vice president of Industrial Design, Molly Anderson, who praised the “clever extra pocket” as a natural accompaniment to Apple products, celebrating the bond between iPhone and its user through a personalized, recognizable silhouette.
