Belgian studio Objekt Architecten has undertaken the Lamat House project in Wichelen, transforming a traditional home into a contemporary space. The studio focused on embracing the surrounding countryside views and restoring the house’s traditional character, which had been concealed by moisture damage to its distinctive stepped gable ends.

To create a more open and airy ambiance, Objekt Architecten implemented a series of modern enhancements. The most notable transformation occurred in the living area at the rear of the house, where the original ceiling was taken down. This bold move resulted in a stunning double-height space that now features a spacious dining area alongside a kitchen beautifully decorated with blue tiles.

This innovative layout effectively counteracts the former dark and confined atmosphere, ushering in a lively and expansive living environment. The interplay of light and space breathes new life into the home, making it a welcoming haven for both relaxation and social gatherings.

To clearly define the dining area from the kitchen, a variety of contrasting material finishes were utilized. A striking large tropical planter, adorned with soft blue tiles, was strategically placed to act as a visual barrier between the two spaces. This planter not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also serves a functional purpose in the layout.

Above, slender red steel columns rise to support a new mezzanine lounge, which is perched on a robust exposed concrete “disc.” This elevated space provides a unique perspective, allowing for a sweeping view of the living area below. Additionally, the double-height window at the back of the home frames beautiful vistas of the garden, enriching the overall experience of the mezzanine.

Preserving the traditional elements, the studio reinforced the original wooden roof structure with matching steel supports. A red balustrade was installed on the mezzanine level, along with red-coloured window frames, complementing the overall design scheme.

While the rear of the house underwent a more open and contemporary transformation, the front remained compartmentalized, housing the bedroom, bathroom, and study areas. This spatial distinction allows for a balanced blend of traditional and modern elements throughout the entirety of Lamat House.

With the Lamat House project, Objekt Architecten has successfully merged a contemporary aesthetic with the existing traditional shell. By introducing modern features and amplifying the connection with the surrounding landscape, the studio has reinvigorated the home, creating an updated and visually stunning living space in rural Wichelen.
