A Century-Old Gem Reimagined: Alma Residence’s Remarkable Metamorphosis

Alma Residence, Montreal, CA / Microclimat Architecture

Félix Michaud

Alma Residence, a Montreal duplex from the early century, has been skillfully transformed into a spacious and intimate single-family home under the guidance of local pratcice Microclimat Architecture. While the front facade has been meticulously restored to honor the architectural language of the original duplex, the connection between the other facades and the exterior showcases a distinctively contemporary approach. Through the creation of a living space that prioritizes tranquility, fulfillment, and luminosity, this project exemplifies the esteemed qualities sought after in urban environments.

Attentive to finding the right balance between a dense program and offering comfortable living spaces, the project reflects a subtle interplay of contraction and expansion of spaces. From the double-height kitchen at the heart of the house, one transitions to the cozy lower-ceiling living room, where openings frame the backyard landscape.

Staircases are placed along the party wall so as not to clutter up the living spaces, and are topped by a skylight, bathing them in soft light. Nestled in a new mezzanine built on the roof of the residence, the master bedroom, with its spacious and elegant bathroom and two terraces at the tree canopy level, is a true oasis of privacy.

The project draws strength from its unconventional location. With its side courtyard, Alma Residence distinguishes itself from the neighboring house. What it sacrifices in surface area, it gains in quality of light, connection to the outdoors, and privacy.

The selection of surfaces and materials has been meticulously done to establish a heartfelt connection with the raw material. This material remains constant yet undergoes changes throughout the day. The kitchen walls, adorned with grooves, allow the plunging light to flow in, while the grain of the wood is brought to life by warm light.

The molded vaults of the ceiling create shimmering effects, and the curtains diffuse light in vaporous waves, adding to the ambiance. These careful considerations and attention to detail, focusing on textures and contrasts, enrich the spaces. The small touches in the design give life to meaningful and harmonious places.
