London-based interior architects Universal Design Studio has recently completed Stockholm’s new lifestyle luxury hotel At Six. The hotel is located in a forgotten part of the city centre on Brunkebergstorg square, which was once a flourishing playground for Stockholm’s belle monde with grand hotels and private residences, restaurants and elegant shops.
At Six presents an art collection with specially commissioned works from some of today’s leading international artists as well as exclusive furniture and fixtures developed together with local and international designers.
From the 1800’s haven for socialites and intellectuals to the 1960s and the government’s clean-up programme that saw 19th century grandeur replaced with brutalist modernity. Universal’s design is focused on humanising the architecture, bringing a sense of desirability and luxury to a brutalist building not often associated with these traits.
A palette of sawn stone, blackened steel, fine timber and polished granite combined with warm greys, natural materials, soft furnishings and classic furniture editions. Light against dark, fineness against mass. Guest rooms feature custom furniture and bespoke lighting, a dark oak clad window bay with tinted mirrors and marble credenzas that run the full length of each room.
Art curator Sune Nordgren has for At Six public spaces and hotel rooms created a collection consisting of selected and commissioned works by acclaimed international artists such as Olafur Eliasson, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Tacita Dean and Julian Opie. At Six signature piece ‘Mar Whispering’, a 2,5 meter high statue placed in the middle of the grand lobby staircase, is a marble head by Catalan artist Jaume Plensa.
At Six feautures 343 rooms including a ’Masterpiece suite’ with a private rooftop terrace and panoramic windows in three directions. The social spaces stretches out on two floors with restaurant, bars, lounges and a 2000 sqm event area for 1000 guests. Dining Room serves contemporary international and seasonal cuisine inspired by all parts of the world, under the direction of Chef Andreas Askling. At Six Cocktail Bar mixes classics with a twist, with signature cocktails like Tipsy Tea and punch bowls. The Listening Lounge is a social living room with focus on sound and music quality with world-class collectors, local and international DJs, lectures, album sessions. Blanche & Hierta is At Six wine bar, coffee house and deli.
