Benjamin Shine Sculpts Tulle Portrait for Maison Margiela

Maison Margiela

Benjamin Shine has recently collaborated with John Galliano’s Spring Summer collection for Maison Margiela presented during the haute couture fashion shows in Paris. Made with some creatively-applied tulle, the face on the coat appears to be floating above the material.

In the making of the figure, Shine worked closely with the British fashion designer over several months, eventually sculpting the figure over the course of more than 300 hours.

“I wanted to see if the face could become completely transparent, like smoke engulfing the body with the coat still visible and moving beneath it,” Benjamin Shine says. “I particularly loved the idea of the tulle flowing from its functional role as the lining of the coat, into the ethereal image.”

Trained as a fashion designer at The Surrey Institute of Art and Design he has completed his studies at Central St Martins in London. In 2003 he opened a creative studio in which he experimented some innovative materials and techniques ranging between art, design and fashion.

Benjamin Shine’s work has attracted since the beginning important institutions in the arts including The Crafts Council of England and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, earning a number of awards including the Red Dot Design Award, The Enterprising Young Brit Award and the Courvoisier Future 500 Art & Design Award.
