Boman Wraps Nanteuil School Extension in a Subtle Green Palette

Paris-bassd practice BOMAN has completed Nanteuil Primary School, a new educational volume in Montreuil, France, that integrates four music classrooms beneath the existing canopy of a historic plane tree, utilizing a trapezoidal wooden structure to promote environmental awareness.

A tailored response to site context defines the project’s conceptual foundation. Rather than imposing a dominant structure, the architects designed a thoughtful intervention that respects the existing schoolyard’s ecological balance. The timber construction acts as both the load-bearing framework and the protective envelope, creating a symbiotic relationship between the built form and the natural surroundings. This choice emphasizes a philosophy of simplicity and vitality, ensuring the new facilities feel like a natural extension of the site rather than an addition.

Tactile materiality shapes the building’s identity through a meticulous play of textures and tones. The facades shimmer with a luminous skin composed of glazed ceramic tiles at the base, ribbed mineral plaster between the windows, and smooth plaster on the upper levels. These subtle variations in material do not create fragmentation but rather emphasize the precision of the construction, revealing the building’s essence through light and shadow.

A unified chromatic narrative weaves the structure together, with a soft green hue linking every element. This color, echoing the leaves of the plane tree, flows seamlessly from the exterior surfaces to the interior walls, beams, eaves, and joinery. Like a sustained musical note, this continuous tone bridges the gap between the natural world and the human-made space, allowing the project to resonate deeply with its setting.

Spatial choreography enhances the sensory experience of the interior. A central, cross-ventilated hallway serves as the social spine of the project, linking the classrooms while maintaining a visual connection to the schoolyard through large windows. Inside, the green palette continues, with glazed tiles around washbasins and stained wooden cupboards reinforcing the unity between the interior rooms and the overall structure. The corridor rises to a generous height, capturing daylight through skylights where passing shadows mark the time of day, creating a calm atmosphere conducive to learning.

Coherent pedagogical design is visible in how the volume interacts with its users and environment. Roof overhangs extend the building’s footprint, providing necessary shade and creating transitional zones between the classroom and the playground. Benches line the walls of the central corridor, stretching the perspective and offering places for pause and observation. This focus on creating a legible, calm environment, where the built fabric supports both concentration and interaction, echoes the meticulous approach seen in other contemporary European educational projects, such as the thoughtful renovation of the Gellert School in Basel by MET Architects, which similarly leverages a curated color palette and material rigor to redefine institutional spaces.

Nanteuil Primary School stands as a testament to the power of a quiet, intentional approach to public infrastructure. By fostering a living continuity between nature and the built environment, the project provides a nurturing space for musical education while enhancing the ecological character of the schoolyard. It is a striking example of how precision and simplicity can create a lasting impact on a community.
