Thai design firm Sher Maker has recently renovated Boonma Studio, a cafe originally located on a hill surrounded by trees and enclosed in a six-meter tall building with limited access. The site, located in Chiangmai, Thailand, includes eight meters of a private forest before reaching the building, and it was essential for the architects to integrate nature to the cafe.
The studio wanted to use the landscape to define a new boundary between the inside and the outside of the project. They created a six-meter exterior curtain as tall as the original building, and used the radius of the building to determine the shapes of the elements. the existing tree and the opaque plastic curtain disguise the building from the entrance.
The exterior curtain has two functions. The first is to create a new boundary for the landscape in the area as an inner boundary before accessing the building. It also becomes an interactive wall for users to have to handle and open by themselves as part of the experience when entering the building. It is another simple way to create interaction between people and space.
Sher Maker covered the existing building’s exterior walls with mirrors, to reflect the surrounding forest. The designers created a curved curtain frame that encircles the reflection. Inside the building, the architects rearranged the layout of the spaces and added light filters for a more intricate visual effect. The interiors’ mood mainly to give the most prominent view of the people inside the building can see trees and landscapes from the external terrace.
