Nestled close to the picturesque Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, Casa Carlo Alberto has undergone an extraordinary metamorphosis, transitioning from a quaint Bed & Breakfast to a delightful residential apartment.

This transformation was skillfully managed by DHD studio, led by Daniel Hunziker, in partnership with Maria Adele Savioli. Daniel and his wife, the proud owners, selected Rome as their sanctuary after numerous business travels, seeking a place that felt like home.

The apartment, located in the vibrant Esquilino district, occupies a building that dates back to 1870 and spans roughly 110 square meters. The renovation focused on reviving the original dimensions and internal features, such as the wooden ceilings that had been hidden beneath cane chamber ceilings, with remnants still visible on the walls.

Two horizontal design elements accentuate the restored heights: the raw, unpainted wall finishes and the original textures. The existing cement tile floors have been lovingly restored, incorporating reclaimed materials to maintain their genuine character.

As part of the material restoration, custom Okumé wood furniture, thoughtfully crafted by Daniel, has been integrated into the space. A prime example is found at the entrance, where a multifunctional Okumé piece serves as both a wardrobe and a sliding door leading to the study-guest room.

The reconfiguration of the space has fostered a new flow among the rooms, achieved through two structural adjustments to the load-bearing walls that redefine movement and perspectives. A striking window now frames the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, establishing a captivating visual connection between the interior and the outside world, greatly enhancing the living experience.

Vintage furnishings and lamps from the 1950s and 1960s, paired with contemporary designs by Daniel Hunziker, create a harmonious blend of nostalgic comfort and modern flair, transforming the apartment into a timeless haven. The carefully curated decor invites a sense of warmth and style, making it a truly inviting retreat.
