Mattress startup Casper has opened in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood a space where New Yorkers can relax and refresh, and even take a nap in tubular wooden pods.
Adjoining Casper’s main retail shop that opened earlier this year, The Dreamery was designed by the brand’s in-house team in collaboration with architecture firm Hollwich Kushner.
Casper was founded in 2014 to reimagine how the world sleeps. Noticing that everyone was downing green juice and wearing fitness trackers — but falling asleep at their desks — Casper set out to champion sleep as an essential pillar of wellness. The Dreamery is the latest extension of that.
As Casper quickly expanded its reach from a cult following to an internationally recognized design sensation, the company continued to bring better sleep to more people — on the road with the Casper Nap Tour, 30,000 feet up with American Airlines, and to the retail environment with Casper Sleep Shops. Now, with feedback from thousands of nap trials and nearly a million customers, Casper is yet again reinventing the sleep experience.
The Dreamery by Casper is a magical oasis in the middle of New York City where you can hit pause and recharge whenever you want. Bleary-eyed from a red-eye? Pulled an all-nighter? Or just stressed out because modern life is, well, stressful? The Dreamery provides Casper comfort on-demand; a quiet, private place with a freshly made bed, where you can kick off your shoes and reboot.
“The Dreamery is about making sleep and rest a part of our regular wellness routines — similar to how many people prioritize a workout class,” said Neil Parikh, co-founder and COO at Casper. “The concept enables us to pilot new ways of bringing better sleep to more people and to more places — whether that’s here, the workplace, airports, or beyond.”
“It’s thrilling to work with a brand like Casper to develop a whole new typology of experience that bridges domestic space, hospitality, and retail,” said Matthias Hollwich, principal at Hollwich Kushner. “Our key challenge was to design and curate the right user experience – transitioning visitors from the urban buzz of SoHo and helping them drift off to sleep in the pods.”
The Dreamery is full of magical details — from a starlit entryway and dream-inducing murals to simple, spacious sleeping nooks. You can now book 45 minutes of rest time for $25 USD, which can be booked on Casper’s website, via ClassPass or Mindbody, or simply walking in. Daydream or dream-dream in one of The Dreamery’s nine private, cozy nooks outfitted with Casper’s outrageously comfortable mattress, pillows, and sheets. Guests are invited to wind down in the lounge, kick back in constellation-print pajamas, and relax with a suite of snooze-worthy amenities before drift-off.
The Dreamery is located at 196 Mercer Street, between Houston and Bleecker streets in New York City. Plans for the Casper store also involve hosting public events regarding wellness and sleep.
