Delar Studio Uses Galvanized Steel to Create “Ever-Changing” Tech Retail Space in Mexicali

Hugo Sierra

In Mexicali, Baja California, the iLIU Experience by Delar Studio reconfigures the traditional cellphone retail model into a high-end boutique environment that prioritizes brand evolution over static sales. By juxtaposing industrial galvanized steel with the tactile warmth of natural wood, the studio has established a flexible spatial framework that facilitates a rotating commercial narrative, moving away from conventional showroom standards toward a more immersive, identity-driven experience.

The subversion of retail norms serves as the project’s primary driver. Delar Studio rejected the sterile, brightly lit repetition common in telecommunications stores in favor of a curated atmosphere. This strategic shift allows the brand to act as a host rather than a mere vendor, consolidating its services into a footprint that feels more like a private gallery. The design acknowledges that in a digital-first world, the physical store must offer a tangible value that justifies the visit.

A narrative of constant flux is embedded into the very walls of the intervention. The interior is treated as a dynamic stage set, capable of adapting to seasonal collections and emerging trends. This prevents the spatial fatigue often found in tech retail, where environments remain frozen while the products they house change monthly. Here, the layout is a tool for storytelling, reflecting a brand in a state of perpetual growth and adaptation within the Mexican market.

Material honesty defines the aesthetic language of the space. The dominance of galvanized sheet metal provides a raw, almost civic quality to the interior, echoing the urban landscape of Mexicali. Rather than hiding these industrial elements, the studio utilizes them as a backdrop for the brand’s signature blue tones. This palette creates a sharp, high-contrast environment that elevates the hardware on display, framing technology as an object of desire rather than a commodity.

The sensory tension between the coldness of metal and the organic grain of wood is where the project finds its balance. Natural timber elements are strategically placed to soften the customer’s interaction points, providing an intuitive sense of approachability. This material contrast does not just serve a visual purpose; it dictates the pace of the visit, using texture to signal areas of rest and consultation versus areas of high-energy product discovery.

Geometric lighting systems act as the connective tissue of the ceiling plane. Circular luminaires, integrated into the metal structural elements, break the linear rigidity of the floor plan. This lighting strategy avoids the flat, clinical glare of standard retail, instead creating pockets of focus that guide the eye toward key displays. It is a technical solution that doubles as a graphic signature, reinforcing the contemporary, almost tech-noir character of the store.

Spatial hierarchy and flow are managed through a series of intentional focal points. While the lateral zones handle high-volume interaction, the rear of the store is anchored by a display dedicated to flagship collections, creating a natural pull through the depth of the site. This sophisticated use of volume and sightlines mirrors the studio’s earlier explorations in commercial architecture in Mexicali, where the economy of space is balanced against the need for a powerful visual impact.

The democratization of the product is realized in the dedicated customization zone. By providing a physical space for users to modify their devices with stickers and accessories, the design fosters a participatory culture. This area shifts the power dynamic from the brand to the consumer, turning a simple purchase into a moment of self-expression. It is a calculated move that transforms a high-tech environment into a personal workshop.

Design as a strategic asset concludes the project’s mission. iLIU Experience demonstrates that long-term commercial value is generated when a space can communicate identity and emotion simultaneously. Through a conscious selection of materials and a rigorous organizational logic, Delar Studio has delivered a project that transcends its operational function, positioning the brand as a sophisticated leader in the regional landscape.
