Two adjacent 18th-century residences house San Miguel de Allende’s most sophisticated retreat, where bespoke contemporary design melds with time-honored Mexican hospitality. The result of a painstaking decade-long renovation project, Dos Casas Hotel & Spa is now defined by an eclectic interior design that augments colonial-era architecture with avant-garde accents.

A tactile framework of stone, marble, wood, iron, leather, and brass sets the stage for a collection of midcentury modern furniture and works by leading Latin American artists. The hotel’s 12 rooms and suites have been individually designed to offer a unique, luxurious experience—from rooftop terraces complete with Jacuzzis in the Signature Suite, to spa baths and steam rooms in the Rooftop Suite Town View.

When architect and entrepreneur Alberto Laposse purchased two 18th-century buildings in 2004, he knew he wanted to fuse them into a great house with respect for its history. The contrast of neo-classical colonial style with a sophisticated contemporary design aesthetic required a painstaking attention to detail.

In 2014, renowned Mexican architect Germán Velasco teamed up with Alberto Laposse to remodel Dos Casas. Inspired by the buildings themselves, Velasco made reference to the colonial era, when San Miguel de Allende was famed for its rich repositories of gold, stone, wood, and leather, which still characterize local aesthetics.

Dos Casas’ interior design juxtaposes those materials with mid-century modern furniture, such as Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair, and bright, bold pieces of art—mostly from Latin America. Luxury amenities, like 400-thread-count cotton linens and marble baths with rain showers, complete the unparalleled ensemble.

Considering owner and Original Alberto Laposse’s past life as a master baker, it comes as no surprise that food is at the heart of Dos Casas Hotel & Spa. Helmed by executive chef Olivier Deboise, the hotel’s on-site restaurant Áperi has become a local destination in its own right thanks to its bold use of fresh local ingredients and flavors.

For more spiritual enrichment, the award-winning IRIS spa rejuvenates body and soul, while the hotel’s communal rooftop terrace offers a veritable urban retreat with breathtaking panoramic views over the city’s 16th-century skyline.
