DS Automobiles pays tribute to a legendary Citroën coupe from the 1970s with the unveiling of the SM Tribute. Drenched in a stunning gold leaf hue, the two-tone exterior glistens under a satin finish, enhanced by a meticulously crafted patina and a sleek black accent. This homage to the 1970s coupe, originally designed by Robert Opron, revives the Gold Leaf color that graced the car’s brochure back in 1971.
The team at DS Automobiles is dedicated to connecting the past with the present, which is why this bi-tone finish is featured in the modern Citroën SM Tribute, echoing styles seen in their concept vehicles like the DS AERO SPORT LOUNGE. “This approach has truly become a signature of DS Automobiles’ designs,” remarks Vincent Lobry, Head of Color, Materials, and Finishes (CMF) Design at DS Automobiles.
The refreshed SM Tribute introduces features absent from the original 1970s model. The glass section that once showcased the headlamp modules and registration plate has been transformed into a vibrant 3D screen that illuminates at the center. Framing this display is a light signature composed of three modules on each side, reminiscent of its predecessor, but now enhanced with vertical daytime running lights that taper off like diamond tips. The side profile maintains its sleek aerodynamic lines, allowing air to glide smoothly over the coupe’s body, flowing from front to back where it tapers elegantly.
At the rear, behind the expansive windows, the quarter panel is ingeniously split, creating an S-shaped silhouette that gives the impression of a floating or sloping rear. Removable fairings encase the rear wheels, optimizing the coupe’s aerodynamics. Inside the Citroën SM Tribute, the essence of the 1970s is palpable, beginning with the oval instrument design. DS Automobiles projects the information display onto a curved-screen console, seamlessly integrated with the steer-by-wire steering wheel.
Within the coupe, DS Automobiles embraces a serene ivory palette crafted from leather and Alcantara, fostering a spacious and luminous ambiance. A prominent display case graces the front of the dashboard, while the seats proudly showcase the timeless upholstery of its predecessor, featuring elegant horizontal cushions.
Luc Quirin, the Interior Designer at DS Automobiles, elaborates that the display utilizes projection technology, eliminating the need for a physical screen. This innovation alleviates any sense of confinement for both the driver and passengers, enhancing the overall spaciousness and contemporary vibe. Drawing inspiration from decorative arts, the design team has infused the interior with exquisite laser-engraved leatherwork and intricate patterns adorning the door panels.
The revival of the Citroën SM as the Tribute traces its origins to the spring of 2020, when DS Automobiles unveiled a collection of sketches dubbed #SM2020 on social media. These artistic renderings emerged from an internal creative challenge among the designers at DS DESIGN STUDIO PARIS, aimed at reimagining the iconic SM from the 1970s.
Public feedback was abundant, with many expressing concerns about preserving the original design’s integrity. The team attentively considered these insights and ultimately wove them into the final creation. DS Automobiles proudly presents the SM Tribute, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the prestigious concours held in the enchanting gardens of the Château de Chantilly.
