Nestled in the picturesque Eastern Townships of Stanstead, Canada, Diptyque by Matière Première Architecture harmoniously integrates with its surroundings, creating a seamless bond between the constructed space and the natural beauty of the landscape. This residential masterpiece is strategically situated on a small plateau, perfectly positioned between a gentle stream that flows toward a tranquil waterfall and a rugged rocky slope.
The architectural firm emphasizes the site’s inherent charm by crafting a sleek 120 sqm dwelling that embodies minimalism. Drawing inspiration from the environment, the design highlights its connection to the stream through thoughtfully placed windows and a layout that fluidly merges indoor and outdoor living. The bold design features a distinctive split saltbox roof, elegantly connected by a transparent walkway, showcasing a commitment to site-specific adaptation.
The core objective of the concept is to shape a dynamic structure that uses its surroundings as a backdrop while incorporating a streamlined layout centered around its framed vistas. To actualize this, the architectural studio conceives a design featuring a saltbox roof, bifurcated at its ridge, and bridged by a glass walkway. This division between the two primary sections highlights their distinct purposes.
The first segment incorporates a carport and a versatile room equipped with a glass garage door that faces the stream. In contrast, the second, more substantial section houses the primary living areas. Both sections are characterized by single-slope cathedral ceilings, adding an element of majesty to the spaces.
Crafted by Nu Drom, the design group’s associated construction firm, Diptyque showcases a striking monochromatic aesthetic. Its exterior, clad in black wood, stands in bold contrast to the pristine white interiors. The black window frames unify the design, creating a remarkable visual impact that resonates with the surrounding plateau.
The minimalist color palette enhances the architectural precision of Diptyque, skillfully defining the silhouette of each structure against the dynamic landscape. This thoughtful interplay of colors not only highlights the buildings’ forms but also allows them to harmonize with the ever-evolving scenery, making a lasting impression.
The building program is thoughtfully divided into two primary sections: the carport, which includes a versatile mudroom, and the main living quarters. At the front of the home, the carport not only provides a practical solution for parking vehicles but also creates a sheltered space for a variety of activities. This area acts as a transitional zone, bridging the outdoors with the interior of the home.
Serving the dual purpose of a mudroom and a compact gym, the carport is designed for functionality and convenience. A striking glass garage door enhances this connection, allowing natural light to flood in and offering views of the surrounding landscape, making the space feel open and inviting.
