The Ferrari Luce arrives tonight in Rome as the most consequential vehicle Maranello has ever built — not despite the absence of a combustion engine, but precisely because of it.
Seventy-nine years ago on this exact date, Franco Cortese steered a Ferrari 125 S to victory at the Gran Premio di Roma at the Baths of Caracalla, setting in motion one of motorsport’s most enduring legends. Ferrari chose the same city, the same date, and the Vela di Calatrava as the setting to unveil the Ferrari Luce — its first fully electric Ferrari production car — making clear that what happened tonight is not a departure. It is a continuation by other means.
The question of why now has a precise answer. Ferrari’s rivals — Lamborghini, McLaren, Aston Martin — have consistently treated electrification as a threat to identity. Ferrari’s position, articulated since the 2022 Capital Markets Day and embodied in the Luce, is the opposite: electrification makes possible a category of Ferrari that no V8 or V12 could ever produce. Four doors, five seats, a centre of gravity 95 mm (3.7 in) lower than the Purosangue, handling dynamics equivalent to a car 400 kg (882 lbs) lighter than its actual 2,260 kg (4,982 lbs) kerb weight, and 0–100 km/h in 2.5 seconds. Floating front and rear aerodynamic wings — structurally independent from the passenger cell — handle all active aerodynamic work, leaving the greenhouse visually uninterrupted. Transparent light panels recede when switched off, contributing nothing to the silhouette. Halo tail lights reference the 360 Modena and 458 Italia without reproducing them. The formal restraint is total, and it required the kind of confidence that comes from designers who love the brand without being conditioned by its habits.

What separates the Luce from every other performance EV on the market is systemic. One motor per wheel — permanent-magnet synchronous units derived from the F80 and the 499P Le Mans prototype — enables torque vectoring that no differential-based system can replicate. Each corner is managed independently across three axes: longitudinal, lateral, and vertical. The Vehicle Control Unit updates actuation targets 200 times per second. The 122 kWh battery, co-developed with SK On and built in Maranello, operates on 800V architecture, supports 350 kW fast charging, and is structurally integrated into the floorpan — contributing 40% to torsional rigidity and eliminating the central tunnel entirely, enabling the five-seat configuration that is a first in Ferrari’s production history. The sound system is the Luce’s most philosophically significant innovation. Rather than synthesizing an engine note — the default solution across the performance EV segment — Ferrari mounted a precision accelerometer on the rear axle housing that captures actual structural vibration from the rotating electric components as they transmit through the metal. That signal is filtered, equalized, and amplified through a patented system Ferrari describes as functionally analogous to an electric guitar: the sound is extracted, shaped, and projected — not generated.
