Flatiron Sky-Line by LOT, New York

Flatiron Sky-Line LOT New York

Brian W. Ferry

Winner of the annual Flatiron Public Plaza Holiday Design Competition, LOT’s first large-scale public installation in New York City is an arched design which allows passersby to relax in hammocks.

Situated next to Madison Square Park, the Flatiron Sky-Line is a collection of ten white powder-coated steel arches, each glowing with LED lights and supporting a suspended hammock. Visitors can take a break from the bustling sidewalks while observing the Flatiron Building, Empire State Building, and rest of the city skyline, without craning necks or halting foot traffic.

 Flatiron Sky-Line LOT New York

Designed by LOT, an architectural and design firm based in New York City and Greece, Flatiron Sky-Line was the winning installation in the third annual Flatiron Public Plaza Holiday Design Competition, hosted by the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership and Van Alen Institute.

Flatiron Skyline is a landmark spatial installation engaging passersby in an intimate interaction within and around it. Tubular arched components, define an outlined trapezoidal galleria at the footsteps of Flat Iron building. Each of the arches is lit along its whole length, a smoothly transitioning lighting effect from daytime to nighttime transforming the look and experience of the installation while making it highly visible from a distance and from above. White net hammocks hanging from each of the arches invite the public to embrace the Flat Iron Plaza skyline and immerse into the constructed tranquility of the Flat Iron Plaza – skyline gazing, socializing, contemplating, and experiencing the surroundings.
