Garden Tower House, Sydney, AUS / Studio Bright

Rory Gardiner

Located in Sydney‘s bustling and diverse neighborhood of Cremorne, Garden Tower House is a unique architectural gem that seamlessly blends modern design with traditional elements. The team at Studio Bright has skillfully transformed the existing cottage into a stunning contemporary space that maximizes natural light and encourages social interaction. The building’s distinctive cladding and strategic orientation provide breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, creating a serene and private oasis in the heart of the city.

Two separate modern structures can be found situated behind the restored weatherboard street front element. These structures have a view of the sunny garden spaces that divide their arrangement down the site. The larger tower provides an upstairs retreat that includes a bedroom zone and an open roof deck above. Meanwhile, the smaller tower reaches up to bring daylight into a high-ceilinged living space. A passage space that connects the towers offers seating to enjoy the garden courtyard.

In such meticulously planned spaces, every detail is carefully considered to maximize the potential of the design and ensure that every aspect contributes to the functionality of the family home. For instance, the addition of a new study room within the existing layout serves multiple purposes, such as providing a workspace, a spare bedroom, a cozy reading nook, or even a retreat for sports enthusiasts.

The Garden Tower House incorporates small pockets of greenery throughout the building to create a lush and verdant environment. These planted areas aim to provide a backyard-like atmosphere, even in spaces where traditional gardens are not feasible. By incorporating vertical planting, the entire building, including its cavities and surfaces, becomes a canvas for climbing plants to thrive and eventually connect the gardens on different levels.
