The HAJ Cottage, located in the scenic Krkonoše Mountains in the Czech Republic, is the result of a collaboration between architecture firm ADR and interior design studio Formafatal. This project was commissioned by a family with children who wanted to create a retreat-like oasis in the mountains that could be enjoyed during both summer and winter. One of the main objectives was for the timber A-frame structure to harmonize with its natural surroundings while also meeting modern aesthetic standards and addressing current living requirements.
Located in the picturesque Krkonoše National Park, the HAJ Cottage is a true gem nestled at an altitude of almost 1,000 meters. As you approach the cottage, it gracefully reveals itself, blending seamlessly with the sloping terrain that descends into the valley. The stone base of the building harmoniously merges with the natural landscape, creating a sense of unity.
One of the most captivating features of the HAJ Cottage is its ability to capture breathtaking views from every angle. The strategically placed windows frame the stunning beauty of the valley, the surrounding landscape, and the majestic Sněžka, the highest mountain in the Czech Republic. It’s a visual feast that truly connects you with nature.
The cottage itself is a masterpiece of design, consisting of two interconnected volumes. The main rectangular structure, covered by a charming gabled roof, measures 15 x 10 meters. Adjacent to it is a ground floor volume with a flat roof, seamlessly blending with the main structure. This clever layout allows for spacious living areas on the ground floor, including a kitchen, dining area, and lounge space. Meanwhile, the attic houses three cozy bedrooms and 2.5 baths, providing a tranquil retreat for its occupants.
The architectural language of the HAJ Cottage is defined by its use of larch wood, aluminum roofing with standing seams, and a stone base that pays homage to the region’s traditional style. By preserving the untouched surrounding terrain, the cottage effortlessly merges with the mountain meadow, creating a harmonious relationship between the built environment and nature.
Inside, the interior design by Formafatal strikes a perfect balance between modern comfort and natural aesthetics. The design team carefully selected materials that reflect the beauty of the surrounding mountains. Solid wood, panels with peeled edges, black rolled steel, unproven perforated sheet metal, and cement screed come together to create an authentic and inviting atmosphere.
