Norm Architects has carefully chosen every design element and architectural feature to enhance this feeling, creating a space that serves as a peaceful retreat from the stresses of daily life. The studio’s approach to this ground-up project was to explore the concept of a traditional Danish summerhouse in a wild natural setting. This is evident in the overall shapes of the structures and the use of wood as the primary material both inside and out.

Norm Architects has also paid careful attention to the flow of the house, ensuring that different functions seamlessly connect through two carefully crafted axes. By positioning the house on the previous plot and working with the sloping surroundings, Norm Architects has minimized the impact on the landscape while maximizing the stunning views. The barn-structure profile of the house stands in contrast to the soft hills and undulated landscape, while the cedar cladding gives it a natural skin that will patinate over time, blending in with the site’s color. Norm Architects has created an architecture that both blends in and stands out, showcasing their unique vision and expertise.

The house exudes a constant presence of natural beauty, whether one is inside looking out or stepping outdoors. The changing light and moods of nature from sunrise to sunset seamlessly become a part of everyday life, creating a serene and harmonious environment. Every detail inside the house emphasizes materiality, evident in the tactile sensation of walking on wooden floors that connects one to the natural world outside. The use of lye-treated Douglas Fir planks from Dinesen throughout the interior not only adds warmth but also ensures a seamless blend with the surrounding environment, enhancing the overall experience of being grounded and connected.

In the timber-clad living room, nature becomes a constant companion, erasing the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The choice of traditional brick flooring pays tribute to Danish residential modernism, infusing the space with a sense of heritage and timelessness. The selection of materials in the living space goes beyond mere aesthetics, serving as declarations of longevity and contributing to a timeless atmosphere that reflects thoughtful design.

A light tone-in-tone material palette is employed to create an airy and open ambiance, enveloping the interior in a gentle and diffused light. This approach to enhancing natural light and subtly accentuating the transitions of the day has been a central driving force in the project’s design. By incorporating wood into the architecture and design, the surroundings are enriched, and the quality of life is elevated in a straightforward manner.

Wooden structures exude a timeless beauty that resonates with successive generations, as the marks of life etched into the wood serve as a humble reminder of our own impermanence. The inherent harmony found in wood becomes a source of inspiration and guidance in the realm of architecture and design.

The two bathrooms, although distinct spaces, seamlessly maintain a harmonious aesthetic, contributing to the overall unity of the residence. Strategically positioned framed views offer captivating glimpses of the lush outdoors, allowing residents to savor the tranquil and natural backdrop while engaging in their daily routines. This intentional design approach, extending throughout the entire home, skillfully blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, fostering a deep sense of tranquility and equilibrium.

To further enhance the connection to nature, one of the bathrooms features direct access to an outdoor shower enclosed by the same rustic yet elegant materials. Encircled by the soothing sounds of nature, residents can indulge in the rejuvenating experience of an open-sky shower, transcending the conventional confines of indoor living and forging a truly sensory connection with the environment.
