House Caroline, situated in Toronto’s Leslieville neighborhood, stands out as a modern A-framed addition to a historic Victorian home dating back to the 1850s. Once defined by its cramped and shadowy rooms, this residence has been beautifully reimagined by Reign Architects into a luminous, airy haven designed to meet the demands of a flourishing family.

The architectural journey began with the clients’ desire to reshape their home to better reflect their daily lives. A key aspect of this vision was the addition of a new third-floor executive retreat, which would serve as a personal haven for the family.

Inspired by a majestic maple tree in their backyard, the architects aimed to create a design that celebrated the beauty of nature. This connection to the outdoors became a guiding principle throughout the project, influencing both the aesthetics and functionality of the space.

One of the main challenges faced by the architects was to maintain the Victorian charm of the original home while addressing the limitations of space and natural light. The design team embraced this challenge with creativity and a commitment to thoughtful design solutions.

To tackle the spatial constraints, the firm introduced custom millwork as a central feature on the ground floor. This innovative approach allowed for a seamless integration of spaces, enhancing both flow and functionality within the home.

A standout element of the design is the dining room, which has been reimagined with a graceful banquette that fits snugly within the existing ornate bay window. This thoughtful layout not only preserves the charm of the original architecture but also provides a comfortable dining area that can accommodate up to eight people.

At the intersection of the kitchen and living room, the architectural narrative unfolds beautifully. White oak cabinets blend seamlessly with the media unit, creating a cohesive look. This design not only offers generous floor-to-ceiling storage but also reveals thoughtfully curated display niches.

Within this architectural choreography, the entertainment unit takes on a dual purpose. It functions as a practical storage bench while also providing an inviting space for extra guest seating or a cozy spot by the warm glow of the wood-burning fire.

Beyond the innovative cabinetry, the design features a double winder stair with sleek, stacked guard rails. This element showcases architectural finesse, effectively maximizing the limited space within the home’s narrow width and shallow depth.

This clever design choice also paved the way for the addition of a luxurious marble kitchen island. It allowed for functional programming at the far ends of the residence, enhancing usability across all three levels.

Being mindful of the solar arc in a north-facing semi-detached context, Reign’s architectural approach adeptly tackles lighting challenges. The design strategically harnesses southern light from above and incorporates warm western light streaming in from the rear facade.

On the ground level, an expansive floor-to-ceiling window assembly, featuring a glass corner, intentionally blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. This design not only forges a strong connection to the old maple tree outside but also ensures uninterrupted exposure to the ever-changing play of light throughout the day.

Ascending through the home unfolds as a journey of light, guided by an open stair design that channels a cascade of celestial illumination from a strategically placed skylight above. This skylight, crafted in harmony with the A-framed timber roof, faces directly south, ensuring that it captures optimal sunlight throughout the day. The result is a bright and inviting atmosphere that enhances the overall experience of moving through the space.

Exposed Douglas Fir roof beams intersect the skylight opening over the stairwell, adding a timeless quality to the design. These beams create a profound connection to the natural world, allowing the beauty of the outdoors to seamlessly blend with the interior. This thoughtful integration of materials and design elements fosters a sense of warmth and comfort.

Each element is purposefully selected to enhance the living experience.
