The Relleno restaurant in Barcelona, designed by local studio Isern Serra, transforms the humble pasta cushion into a dramatic architectural concept, enveloping the two-storey space in soft, metallic padding. This sculptural gesture defines the eatery’s interior design, where foam-filled, grid-like panels covered in a shimmering metallic fabric clad the walls and ceilings.

The design intent directly references Relleno‘s signature product—stuffed pasta—by translating its soft, pillowy form into an immersive textural experience. Serra opted for a deliberately neutral material palette for the structure to emulate a fashion retail approach, allowing the vibrant colours of the food packaging to stand out as primary visual accents, much like merchandise on display.

Contrasting the plush, foam-filled cushions is the precise geometry of stainless steel, which dictates the functional elements across both floors. The material forms the primary counter and back bar on the ground level, while upstairs, it converts a central column into a sleek communal table. This use of polished steel provides a necessary industrial counterpoint to the textile-heavy environment.

The atmosphere is further manipulated by an immersive architectural lighting scheme. The space utilizes adjustable RGB lighting to dynamically wash the interior in shifting hues, altering the mood from day to night. Vertical neon tubes and backlit panels enhance this effect, creating complex reflections that dance across the highly reflective metallic fabric and steel surfaces. On the ceiling, exposed ductwork provides an element of raw, industrial chic, balancing the high polish of the custom fittings.

Key artistic elements include a bespoke light fixture by French artist MLK Furniture suspended above the bar, anchoring the main service area. Upstairs, the upper-level dining space features a continuous, custom banquette upholstered in the same signature metallic fabric, creating a cocoon-like environment.

Functionality is handled with streamlined simplicity. Meals are collected from a designated dispenser cabinet lined with numbered padded modules, ensuring an efficient flow. The seating comprises circular stainless steel tables and vibrant orange stools, providing the only significant colour contrast to the predominantly monochrome, shimmering modern design. The result is a highly tactile, conceptually driven space that perfectly merges culinary identity with progressive design studio execution.
