OMA and DJ Harvey Collaborate to Create Extraordinary Nightclub at Potato Head Resort

Dutch Architecture studio OMA  has joined forces with DJ Harvey to create an extraordinary nightclub at the Potato Head resort in Seminyak, Bali. This collaboration has resulted in a space where partygoers can enjoy an elevated experience, thanks to optimized acoustics and a sprung dance floor.

Following the completion of the resort itself in 2020, OMA returned to work with the Potato Head Design Studio to design the interiors of Klymax. The focus was on acoustically treating the space to transform the entire dance floor into a “sonic sweet spot”.

DJ Harvey, the English music maestro, brought his extensive knowledge gained from four decades of experience working in nightclubs to the project. His aim was to distill the most unique and significant elements from the world’s best parties and venues, both past and present, into what he believes to be the ultimate nightclub experience.

The design team explained that at Klymax, sound takes precedence. The room was constructed to showcase the music in the best possible way, resulting in a visually appealing design as well.

To achieve optimal sound quality, the club’s walls and ceilings are panelled with teak veneer. These panels are perforated with over 2.6 million holes, which serve to “tame errant frequencies” by preventing sound waves from reflecting and distorting the audio.

These teak veneer panels are installed on top of equally perforated plywood sheets and a layer of Rockwool insulation, creating a buffer in front of the 20-centimetre-thick concrete exterior walls. This meticulous construction ensures that the sound within the club remains pristine and immersive, enhancing the overall nightclub experience for all partygoers.

An elevated seating area furnished with leather is situated on one side of the room, while a disco ball, measuring one meter in diameter, is suspended from the ceiling at the center. The club features a “muted bar” where cocktails are readily available on tap to minimize the noise from shakers and bottles.
