LEGO has unveiled its latest masterpiece in brick form: the LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set. This stunning 2,615-piece set, developed in close collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, allows art aficionados and LEGO enthusiasts alike to recreate one of the world’s most iconic paintings. Van Gogh’s vibrant 1889 Sunflowers comes to life in three dimensions, capturing the artist’s signature impasto brushstrokes and radiant yellows.

More than just a static image, the LEGO set offers an interactive experience. Builders can adjust the petals of the 16 sunflowers, creating a dynamic and personalized interpretation of the artwork. The set also includes a removable frame, a tile bearing Van Gogh’s signature, and a hanger element for easy display. Imagine the satisfaction of layering brick upon brick, mimicking Van Gogh’s technique and witnessing the sunflowers emerge from the canvas of LEGO bricks.

The collaborative process with the Van Gogh Museum is a key element of this project. LEGO Designer Stijn Oom explained the challenges of translating the impasto texture and asymmetrical composition into LEGO form. “Working on one of the world’s most famous paintings can be quite daunting,” Oom admitted, “but recreating Sunflowers has been a dream come true.” The meticulous attention to detail is evident, from the carefully chosen shades of yellow to the intricate construction of each flower.

To further enrich the building experience, LEGO has partnered with the Van Gogh Museum to create a dedicated podcast. Launching on March 1st on LEGO.com, YouTube, and Spotify, the podcast features Senior Curator Nienke Bakker and LEGO Designer Stijn Oom discussing the collaboration and the story behind Van Gogh’s sunflower paintings. This audio companion provides valuable insights into the design process and the historical context of the artwork.

Rob Groot, Managing Director of the Van Gogh Museum, expressed his excitement about the project, highlighting the collaboration’s focus on detail and appreciation for the original artwork. “We hope this LEGO set will inspire and engage new audiences with the art and life story of Vincent van Gogh,” Groot stated.

The launch of the set is accompanied by a series of exciting events. Two lifestyle brick replicas of the painting will be permanently displayed in the LEGO Store, Amsterdam, and the Van Gogh Museum. LEGO fans in Amsterdam and Marseille will have the opportunity to meet Stijn Oom and have their sets signed. A LEGO installation will be on view at the Van Gogh Museum from June to August 2025, followed by showings at LEGO House Billund and LEGO World, Utrecht. A virtual tour will also be created, making the installation accessible to a global audience. Select LEGO Stores will host a Sunflowers-themed Make and Take event in early March.
