M·A·C Cosmetics has redefined beauty retail with its first global art flagship store, the M·A·C ART CHAMBER, unveiled at Nanjing’s prestigious Deji Plaza. Designed by X+Living under founder Li Xiang, this groundbreaking space transcends conventional cosmetics retail, transforming it into an immersive architectural experience rooted in musical art. The launch strategically coincides with M·A·C’s 20th anniversary in Mainland China.

For Li Xiang, this project represented profound philosophical alignment: “Beauty is never something that floats; it is always a directional force…” Her vision rejects standardized beauty in favor of conveying self-identity and free choice—capturing the power of beauty as an awakening mechanism. This ethos drove X+Living’s complete visual overhaul of the Deji Plaza flagship, merging brand cultural DNA with a groundbreaking spatial experience.

The conceptual foundation centers on the piano as design starting point. Recognizing music as a universal emotional decoder, X+Living harnessed its transcultural resonance to echo M·A·C’s artistic essence (Makeup·Art·Cosmetics). Deconstructivist techniques then translated abstract musical theory into tangible architecture, reimagining piano mechanics as spatial poetry.

Visitors experience the interior of a giant piano—a space seemingly carved from the instrument’s ordered components. Strings, actions, and escapements are stripped of their ornate shell, enlarged, and reconfigured into a sculptural matrix. The main facade integrates geometric language from M·A·C’s bullet lipsticks and eyeshadows, forging a distinct brand DNA signature system.

At the entrance, a deconstructed grand piano forms a signature display fixture. White key platforms establish the foundational melody while black keys introduce harmonic complexity. X+Living’s design ingeniously rethinks product logic: iconic black-tube lipsticks on white platforms evoke how color, like melody, creates daily richness. This transforms the M·A·C Cosmetics color family into a visual spectrum—a “color symphony” offering endless aesthetic variations.

This architectural reinterpretation establishes “space becomes the instrument.” As shoppers navigate display platforms, they become composers weaving harmonies. Product interactions morph into impromptu aesthetic creations, deepening the immersive retail experience. Every lipstick trial becomes a note in a personal declaration.

In the Infinite Fantasy Backstage, suspended piano mechanics guide exploration. Makeup stations—modeled on product packaging—feature mirrored cabinets and pull-out chairs. This flexible design enables seamless transitions between artistic display and commercial activities, accommodating diverse retail scenarios.

Sonic Light and Electric Color orchestrate the atmosphere. Dynamic lighting shifts through spectrums, creating rhythmic visual pulses that evoke fashion-forward energy. This boundary-breaking experiential space turns makeup application into self-awakening, where color choices resonate like musical notes.

The M·A·C ART CHAMBER is Li Xiang and X+Living’s manifesto in mechanical poetics. Much like music’s universal appeal, this “Cosmetic Symphony Hall” declares through spatial language that beauty should flow as freely as sound. It stands as a testament to architectural innovation, brand identity, and the transformative power of beauty.
