BMW Motorrad

The iconic R 90 S, a symbol of BMW Motorrad‘s sporting legacy, is igniting passion in a fresh wave of riders. The R 12 S, a contemporary interpretation of this iconic motorcycle, promises to deliver thrilling performance and timeless style. Debuting in 1973, the R 90 S created a sensation in the motorcycle realm with its formidable 67 hp and an exhilarating top speed of 200 km/h, establishing a new benchmark for riding excitement.

Chief Designer Hans A. Muth masterfully captured the essence of sportiness in its design, introducing the R 90 S as the first production motorcycle to feature an aerodynamic handlebar fairing. The striking red “90” emblazoned on the engine’s emblem further emphasized its racing pedigree, making it a coveted choice among enthusiasts.

The R 90 S quickly gained a reputation bolstered by its racing triumphs. Notably, in 1976, Hans-Otto Butenuth and Helmut Dähne clinched a class victory at the Production TT on the Isle of Man. That same year, Steve McLaughlin triumphed in the prestigious 200 Miles of Daytona, while his teammate Reg Pridmore made history as the first AMA Superbike Champion. Today, the R 90 S remains a highly sought-after model, just as it was in its heyday.

More than the Concept Ninety study presented by BMW Motorrad in May 2013, the new BMW R 12 S takes up the spirit of the R 90 S in its overall concept as well as in many details and transfers it skillfully into the present day. Based on the R 12 nineT, it embodies an authentic and sporty retro bike and utilizes several ingredients that make up a skillful homage to the R 90 S.
