MINI JCW and Deus Ex Machina Unveil Two Radical Customised One-Off Cars

MINI JCW x Deus Ex Machina custom one-off cars The Skeg and The Machina

In a meeting of minds where asphalt meets sand, MINI John Cooper Works and cult custom outfit Deus Ex Machina have joined forces, resulting in a pair of spectacular customised one-off cars. More than mere vehicles, ‘The Skeg’ and ‘The Machina’ are rolling sculptures, born from a shared philosophy where a love of speed is inextricably linked to creativity and considered design.

This collaboration is built on a foundation of deep respect for craftsmanship, culture, and the communities that define both brands. “MINI models have always been characterized by a blend of creative design and motorsport dynamics,” explains Stefan Richmann, Head of MINI. “Thanks to our collaboration with Deus Ex Machina, we are taking this philosophy to a new level.” The result is a purist, functional and graphic design approach that celebrates raw mechanics and the beauty of imperfection.

The rally-bred aggression of The Machina’s front end contrasts with the sleek, aerodynamic profile of The Skeg’s rear, showcasing the two extremes of this unique collaboration.

The two vehicle concepts, one electric and one combustion-powered, are visually tied together by a large white ‘X’ across the roof—a bold signature marking the co-creation process between the two iconic brands. “Every single detail has been crafted with artisanal precision and expertise,” says Holger Hampf, Head of MINI Design. “This has resulted in unique characters that are clearly perceived as belonging together through their distinctive design language and use of graphics.”

The Skeg is the electric-powered incarnation, a minimalist rebellion drawing inspiration from surf culture. Its vivid yellow and silver bodywork makes a progressive statement, while its form is ruthlessly functional. Semi-transparent fiberglass panels reduce weight by 15% and refine aerodynamics. The rear features a unique Flex Tip Surf Spoiler, its form inspired by the concave underside of a surfboard to generate lift and manage airflow. Inside, the connection to the coast deepens with neoprene-upholstered bucket seats, tension straps for securing gear, and even fiberglass trays for wetsuits. The fiberglass dashboard itself is a direct transfer of surfboard construction technology into the automotive world, embodying a utilitarian spirit where purpose always trumps polish.

The Machina’s dramatic rear diffuser and central exhaust meet The Skeg’s semi-transparent fiberglass panels, a striking juxtaposition of combustion power and electric minimalism.

In stark contrast, The Machina is a visceral tribute to motorsport. Powered by a combustion engine, its red, white, and black livery screams racing heritage. Its exterior is a functional homage to MINI’s competition history, featuring widened fenders, a quartet of additional rally lights on the bonnet, and a dramatic Can-Am-style rear spoiler. The aggressive diffuser is inspired by the MINI JCW race car that conquered the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Inside, it is a raw, handcrafted approach laid bare: an exposed roll cage, raw aluminium floor plates, 5-point racing harnesses, and a waxed fabric dashboard that gains character with use. The cockpit is an ode to direct, mechanical interaction, featuring classic toggle switches and a hydraulic handbrake, offering a pure, unfiltered driving experience.

The striking exterior graphics were a concentrated creative effort overseen by Deus’ Creative Director, Carby Tuckwell, and renowned designer Matt Willey, whose work references the glorious history of the classic Mini Cooper S at the Monte Carlo Rally.

Extending the collaboration beyond metal and fiberglass, a capsule MINI x Deus Ex Machina apparel collection will launch, reflecting the shared DNA of both brands through precision engineering and timeless styling. The world will get its first look at these automotive artworks at the IAA Mobility 2025 show in Munich, where the vehicles and the apparel will be unveiled.

As the brands state, ‘You can be first after me’ – a motto that perfectly captures the infectious enthusiasm of this partnership, promising an exciting new chapter where automotive passion is expressed through unparalleled design and authenticity.
