To redesign an icon is a daunting task. Nendo and Arep embraced this challenge with the TGV Inoui, a project that demanded a holistic approach, from the train’s aerodynamic form to the tactile details of its interior. The result is a masterclass in collaborative design, a high-speed train that prioritizes both efficiency and the passenger’s experience.
A joint venture between the renowned Japanese studio Nendo and Arep, a subsidiary of SNCF, France’s state-owned railway company, began in 2018 with a bold ambition: to redefine the TGV experience “from nose to seat.” The starting point? The train’s inherent dynamism, its sinuous, aerodynamic form that evokes the flow of a river.
“The train looks like no other means of transport; it makes its way through the landscape, rather like the flow of a river,” the design teams explained, their vision rooted in a “fluid horizon line” that permeates every aspect of the design. This concept, a visual echo of water’s surface, creates a sense of seamless movement, blurring the boundaries between the train and its surroundings.
The most striking feature is undoubtedly the train’s new nose. More aerodynamic for improved energy efficiency, it features a sleek, black ellipse that lends it an almost sentient quality, a subtle nod to the animal kingdom. This sculptural element contrasts beautifully with the train’s bright white exterior, a deliberate choice to minimize solar heat absorption and reduce cooling energy consumption.
Stepping inside the TGV Inoui is akin to entering a carefully curated space, a “personal bubble of comfort” as Arep describes it. The fluid horizon line continues within, manifested in the soft, undulating forms of the seating and the playful, pebble-inspired lamps. The color palette, a subtle homage to the French tricolor, features red and blue upholstery and carpeting to distinguish first and second-class carriages, respectively.
The seats, ergonomically designed and crafted from over 90 percent recyclable materials, are a marvel of modern engineering. Their 3D-knitted fabric stretches over a lightweight structure and foam cushions, providing a “hammock-like” comfort that adapts to individual body shapes. Slimmer than their predecessors, they maximize legroom and seamlessly integrate charging sockets and lighting.
Nendo and Arep’s attention to detail extends to the lighting. The rounded, bright yellow lamps, a contemporary take on traditional train sconces, inject a vibrant pop of color into the serene interior.
The dining car, now christened “Le Bistro TGV Inoui,” is a testament to thoughtful design. Spread over two levels, connected by an open staircase, it offers a welcoming and efficient dining experience. The downstairs level features self-service fridges and payment terminals, while the mezzanine boasts 28 seats arranged in cozy booths. The soft, organic shapes that define the passenger carriages are echoed here, creating a comfortable and inviting lounge atmosphere.
The design process was deeply collaborative, incorporating insights from conductors, drivers, and cleaning staff to optimize usability and functionality. The materials and fittings were chosen for their durability and ease of maintenance, with 97 percent of all materials being recyclable, ensuring the TGV Inoui remains a sustainable and enduring icon for decades to come.
Unveiled at the Gare de Lyon in Paris, the TGV Inoui is more than just a train; it’s a carefully orchestrated experience, a fluid journey that blends comfort, efficiency, and aesthetic beauty. With its scheduled launch in 2026, it promises to redefine high-speed travel, carrying passengers into a future where design and functionality seamlessly converge.
