The 911 GT3 90 F. A. Porsche: A Stealthy, Fabric-Clad Homage to the Man Who Defined Modern Design

Porsche

Porsche has unveiled the 911 GT3 90 F. A. Porsche, a highly specific, limited-edition sports car and design object that elevates personalization to a museum-quality level. Launched to mark what would have been the 90th birthday of founder Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the car is an exercise in functional nostalgia, drawing direct inspiration from the personal vehicle and even the favourite jacket of the man who defined the Porsche 911 and established the influential Porsche Design studio. Only 90 units will be built by the brand’s Sonderwunsch division, ensuring its status as an instant collector’s item.

Finished in the custom F. A. Greenmetallic paint, the rear view of the limited-edition sports car is captured by the water, highlighting the ’72’ racing graphic and sleek lines.

F. A. Porsche’s design philosophy—”When you consider the function of an object, the form usually emerges by itself”—was a radical commitment to essentialism that remains a cornerstone of modern design. This commemorative 911 GT3(based on the discreet Touring Package) embodies that principle by using subtle, highly personalized cues instead of flashy ornamentation. The exterior is finished in F. A. Greenmetallic, a bespoke Paint to Sample Plus hue carefully developed to reference the Oakgreenmetallic of F. A.’s own 911 from the 1980s. This specific colour choice subtly sets the tone for the entire project, tying a high-performance automobile to a moment in personal history.

The 911 GT3 90 F. A. Porsche is dramatically presented on a platform over the water, emphasizing the custom green paint that recalls F. A. Porsche’s personal G-Series model.

The vehicle further deviates from standard production through specific material and component choices. It features Sport Classic wheels painted in satin-gloss black—a rare inclusion on the GT3 Touring—that harken back to the iconic Fuchs rims and the brand’s historic automotive design. This detail, along with a diminutive gold-plated badge engraved with the ‘90 F. A. Porsche’ logo on the boot lid, communicates the anniversary’s significance without shouting. The car is an elegant demonstration of how small, considered design decisions can carry immense weight and provenance.

The exclusive Porsche Design Chronograph 1, a nod to F. A. Porsche’s original timepiece, sits nestled in the open-pore wood-trimmed centre console of the commemorative 911 GT3.

Inside, the cabin becomes a tactile portfolio of F. A. Porsche’s preferences. The material palette includes Truffle Brown Club Leather contrasted with Chalk Beige stitching. Most striking are the seat centres, which feature the exclusive F. A. Grid-Weave fabric. This patterned textile, woven from five colours, is a direct replica of the pattern found on F. A. Porsche’s favourite jackets—pieces that were reportedly always present in his home office alongside his pipe and pencil. It’s a move that blurs the line between vehicle interior and personal archive, transforming the seating surface into a piece of wearable art and personal memory.

The limited-edition Porsche Junior sled, crafted from carbon fiber and featuring the F. A. Grid-Weave fabric seat, is displayed beside the 911 GT3.

The influence of Porsche Design is integrated throughout the dashboard and controls. The gear knob is crafted from open-pore walnut plywood and features a plaque bearing F. A. Porsche’s signature, contrasting an organic, traditional material with the GT3’s high-tech performance. The Sport Chrono watch is styled after the original 1972 Chronograph 1, the world’s first black wristwatch and a legendary symbol of F. A.’s functional aesthetic. An engraved gold-plated plaque on the dashboard, declaring the car ‘One of 90’, acts as the final, definitive stamp on this exceptional piece of engineering.

Beyond the car, the experience extends to equally specific luxury accessories. Buyers receive an exclusive version of the Chronograph 1, featuring F. A.’s initials on the dial and a rotor designed to mimic the car’s unique wheels—a perfect synthesis of design continuity. Additionally, a specialized weekender bag is included, using the same Truffle Brown leather and F. A. Grid-Weave fabric as the car’s interior. The entire suite of objects—car, watch, and bag—is a holistic expression of personalized product design, ensuring that F. A. Porsche’s legacy of uncompromising function and timeless form continues to accelerate into the future.
