HW Studio Arquitectos has recently completed the Shi House, a stunning architectural masterpiece nestled on the slope of a ravine in central Mexico. Each day, as the sun sets behind the majestic mountain, this house patiently awaits its daily spectacle.
This extraordinary project consists of two distinct elements. Firstly, a vertical stone volume that houses the stairs and various circulation areas, seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings over time. Secondly, a horizontal white element that encompasses the entire program of the house. This abstract and visually captivating volume creates a harmonious balance between the organic beauty of nature and the artistry of human design.
Influenced by the philosophy of some Eastern cultures, where opposites are believed to intensify experiences, Shi House beautifully merges two contrasting elements. The lush and vibrant Baroque mountain, adorned with abundant vegetation, meets the two Platonic volumes of the house. It is a captivating exercise in the convergence of these opposing forces.
While the house remains discreet and private from its neighbors, it opens up towards the front and one side, revealing breathtaking views of a golf course and a natural reserve. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are thoughtfully designed with a floor and roof that frame the panoramic vista. This architectural framing enhances the beauty of the ravine, creating a seamless connection between the interior and the exterior.
The bedrooms and private areas, on the other hand, are intentionally secluded, devoid of windows that face the outside world. Instead, they are illuminated by a long courtyard, a serene gathering space for the family. This intimate oasis only connects with the outside through the vast expanse of the sky above.
A central division between the social and private areas in the house is prominently marked by a long axis culminating in the golf course. This axis, or corridor, presents an anomaly; a single, slightly curved wall that aims to soften the journey, and also serving as a tribute to the three women comprising the family.
The house appears to sit gently upon the mountain, with the final part of the slab floating lightly above it. It is supported by pilings covered by the same earth from the excavation, giving the impression that this large white element simply decided to perch there.
Shi House is a testament to the artistry and vision of HW Studio. It is a sanctuary where nature and architecture coexist in perfect harmony, inviting residents to immerse themselves in the captivating beauty of their surroundings.
