Takk Transforms Construction Waste into Enchanting Mobile Bedrooms for Kids

José Hevia Blach

The creative minds behind the Spanish studio Takk have introduced a unique mobile child’s bedroom crafted from concrete blocks and recycled insulation, seamlessly integrated into their industrial apartment in Barcelona. This innovative space, named Roma’s Bedroom, was designed specifically for their six-year-old daughter, Roma, and occupies a portion of the family’s expansive 400-square-meter loft. The bedroom’s design reflects the dynamic nature of the apartment, as it is elevated on a wheeled base, allowing it to be repositioned to suit the ever-evolving layout of the home.

The inspiration for this delightful bedroom came directly from Roma herself, who expressed a desire for her own personal space. Her parents, Mireia Luzárraga and Alejandro Muiño, embraced her vision, incorporating her ideas into the design. The structure features a generously pitched roof and an elevated foundation, reminiscent of a child’s whimsical drawing of a house. This imaginative design not only fulfills Roma’s wish for a special retreat but also adds a playful touch to the overall aesthetic of the loft.

The bedroom is ingeniously constructed with a wheeled wooden base, upon which stacked concrete blocks create a sturdy support for a cozy wooden enclosure. Accessed by charming wooden steps and a small yellow door, the space is surrounded by operable white windows and bubble windows that invite natural light. Internally, the walls are lined with warm wooden panels, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, a ladder leads to an exposed attic area tucked beneath the pitched roof, providing an alternative sleeping space that adds to the room’s charm.

Takk’s thoughtful design addresses the challenges of climate control within the expansive industrial loft. Recognizing the impracticality of regulating the entire space without incurring significant costs, the studio crafted Roma’s Bedroom to offer two distinct living environments. One area is designed for use during the colder months, while the other, nestled under the gabled roof, is perfect for summer nights. This innovative approach not only enhances the functionality of the space but also reflects a commitment to sustainable living.

The bedroom in the Takk apartment, much like other areas of the structure, is crafted from repurposed materials sourced from earlier projects. This includes concrete blocks, timber, drywall sheets, and recycled cotton insulation that adorns the exterior. Designers Luzárraga and Muiño are committed to utilizing recycled materials in their work, pushing back against the traditional materials typically found in residential design.

“It challenges modern design and architecture to address the climate crisis,” they explained. “Despite the seemingly rigid and repetitive regulations regarding home spatial characteristics, this project aims to showcase the possibilities of renewal in the housing industry.”

In addition to their industrial nature, these materials have been transformed into a “cheerful and playful” environment for Roma. “Roma’s bedroom exemplifies how housing codes can be adapted to accommodate environmental considerations while fostering a more liberated and enjoyable living experience,” the designers noted.
