The Benefits of Soundproof Windows

Wooden windows are a great design choice – both for a single-family home and larger residential buildings. Modern timber windows often have excellent technical parameters – especially with regard to thermal and acoustic insulation. If comfort, peace, and quiet are what you long for, you should absolutely consider replacing your old plastic windows with wooden ones.

How can you ensure that you buy the best soundproof windows on the market? In this article, we discuss all the crucial factors you should consider before completing the transaction, as well as the benefits of making such an investment.

The noise level of whispering is around 20 dB. Keep this in mind while analyzing the sound insulation performance of timber windows. The windows’ ability to absorb the sound can be shown by means of the Rw index – the higher the Rw value, the more effective the protection against noise. For noises up to 60 dB (noise level of an electric toothbrush), windows with an Rw of 24 are recommended. To absorb noises reaching 70 dB (e.g. washing machine), you’ll need windows with an Rw of 35. But which elements make windows soundproof?

Noise reduction windows – how do they work?

A modern wooden window is a complex construction. What count the most in terms of acoustic insulation, are:

  • the window profiles,
  • type of reinforcement used,
  • types of fittings and seals,
  • the installation method.

Interestingly, during the installation process, the noise reduction level of a window can decrease by as much as 2 dB. The experience and skills of the fitter are, therefore, not irrelevant.

Glazing is also of great importance – especially when it comes to the thickness of the glass panes. Professional soundproof windows often make use of special acoustic glass, which is even better at reducing noise levels. In some windows, glass is bonded into the sash to further improve their thermal and acoustic properties. It should be done mainly around the perimeter of the window and along each edge, using special acoustic film. Timber windows must be pressed firmly against the frame. The smaller the glazing area, the easier it will be to reduce the noise. It is also advisable that soundproof windows have no ventilators, as this could affect the acoustic properties.

Why invest in soundproof windows?

Noise reduction windows are a great alternative for those living in a densely populated city, such as London. Constant noise, a cacophony of sounds from the busy streets – it is only natural in vibrant metropolises. Unfortunately, such conditions can not only make living less comfortable in certain areas, but they can even lead to serious health problems – for example, decrease concentration, cause irritation or sleep disturbances.

Noise reduction with solid timber windows

A well-made and properly installed window should be airtight, stable, and rigid. This ensures that it does not wobble or vibrate and, therefore, does not transmit sounds. You may wonder whether wood is the right material for the production of soundproof windows. The answer, however, is YES! Wood is flexible and robust, so it is perfect for manufacturing windows and doors that will reduce the noise from outside – and will continue to do so through the years.

Soundproof windows – a higher standard of comfort

Soundproof windows will make your life much more comfortable. The difference in the noise level of 20–30 dB is instantly noticeable, and you will feel it every single day. High-quality timber windows are worth their price – especially if you live in a densely populated housing estate or nearby a busy street.

If you worry about the high cost of soundproof windows, keep in mind that noise absorption goes hand in hand with other practical properties: above-average thermal insulation, anti-burglary protection and increased durability are only some of them. All in all, soundproof windows are a wise investment, and it is not worth economising on them.
