Tokujin Yoshioka Designs New Issey Miyake Store in London’s Mayfair

Olivier Baco

Issey Miyake opens a new shop in the London district of Mayfair. Designed by artist and designer Tokujin Yoshioka in shades of black and white, it features an innovative 10-meters-long triangular steel hanging bar, which gives the impression that the clothes float in midair.

The minimal space is spread across three floors, and combines the spirit of Issey Miyake’s making things with modern architectural design. It is a unique space that creates a contrast between a historic building and modern design.

The new Issey Miyake store has been completed on Brook Street in central London. The space, spread across three floors, features a symbolic representation of “floating sculpture and clothes”. A giant 12m-long form bears a sculpted face, while at the same time serving as a hanger pipe to display Issey Miyake’s innovative threads. This is a minimal space that combines the making things of Issey Miyake themselves and a design that transcends time.
