Local entrepreneur Varun Kataria has introduced a vibrant venue that boasts the only permanent roller rink in New York City, nestled in the heart of Bushwick, Brooklyn. This unique space, named Xanadu, has transformed a former industrial warehouse into a lively hub, thanks to Kataria and his dedicated team, who also manage the nearby Turks Inn and Sultan Room. Xanadu is a versatile environment featuring a roller rink, a stage for performances, a bar area, and spacious restrooms, one of which can be adapted into a cozy “club within a club.”
To create a seamless roller rink experience, Kataria faced the challenge of removing existing columns that cluttered the original layout. Collaborating with a local architect, he ingeniously designed a new ceiling structure that suspends from the superstructure, allowing for an expansive, uninterrupted skating surface.
The centerpiece of this dynamic venue is the hand-painted maple-wood rink, surrounded by a riot of colors and patterns that enhance the overall atmosphere. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a skate rental desk, leading them through an archway adorned with a sofa that wraps around a pole. A lengthy bar runs alongside raised seating areas, inviting patrons to relax and enjoy the vibrant surroundings.
Banquet-style seating lines one side of the venue, while multiple entry points provide easy access to the expansive rink. The ceiling features whimsical cutouts illuminated by track lighting, drawing inspiration from the Memphis Group design movement, which lends the space a playful, “elevated adult day care” vibe.
“It’s all about embracing playfulness,” Kataria remarked. “The interplay of colors has been a true delight.” He emphasized that the eclectic mix of influences and eras was intentionally designed to create an “uncanny” experience for visitors.
Elements like infinity mirrors adorning the elongated bar, vibrant designs woven into the carpet, and a variety of unique vinyl surface patterns come together to create a tapestry of historical eras. Kataria noted that this eclectic mix serves to “trigger nostalgic feelings” while maintaining a modern flair. He emphasized the goal of revitalizing a form of entertainment that many tend to link with bygone days.
The restrooms, however, are predominantly simple in design—one in striking red and the other in cool blue. The red restroom cleverly conceals a DJ setup, transforming it into the lively Club Flush.
