Atelier Zero Designs PERTRE Apartment: Clever Use of 55 sqm in Milan

Matteo Losurdo

Atelierzero has masterfully transformed a compact 55 square meter apartment in Milan, proving that thoughtful design can maximize both space and character. The PERTRE Apartment project centers around a theme of rediscovery, unearthing hidden architectural treasures and cleverly using color to define distinct zones within the limited footprint. What was once a typical “ringhiera” layout, with living and sleeping areas separated by a central service core, has been reimagined into a dynamic and vibrant living space.

The renovation process itself became a journey of revelation. During demolition, a beautiful vaulted brick ceiling and a series of elegant arches, previously concealed, were brought to light. These original features became the cornerstone of the design, informing the spatial organization and aesthetic direction of the entire project.

Ateliezero’s primary intervention focused on the central service core, dramatically improving the apartment’s flow and functionality. The challenge lay in creating a sense of dynamism within a relatively static layout. The solution? Color. Used architecturally, color becomes the protagonist, imbuing each area with its own distinct personality and visually expanding the perceived space.

The vibrant palette unfolds like a carefully curated narrative. A striking red defines the central core, highlighting the rediscovered arches and a newly vaulted corridor. This bold choice creates a dramatic focal point and emphasizes the apartment’s historical character. The bathroom is bathed in a sunny yellow, creating a cheerful and invigorating space.

A calming blue graces the bedroom, promoting rest and relaxation. In the kitchen, antique pink cabinetry provides a soft counterpoint to the striking green marble backsplash, a playful yet sophisticated combination. Finally, the living room is rendered in crisp white, providing a neutral backdrop that allows the colorful elements to truly shine.

The theme of rediscovered arches is echoed throughout the apartment, creating a cohesive design language. Rounded shapes appear in the enclosed shower, the custom-milled panels concealing the radiators, and the semi-arched entrances to the walk-in closet behind the bed. These subtle curves, combined with the circular porthole window that brings natural light into the bathroom, create a delightful interplay of shapes and colors, softening the edges of the small space and adding a touch of whimsy.

The PERTRE Apartment is a powerful example of thoughtful renovation. Atelierzero has not only maximized the potential of a limited 55 square meters but has also celebrated the apartment’s history, revealing its hidden charm and creating a vibrant, contemporary home. This project demonstrates that even small spaces can be imbued with character and style, proving that good design is not about size, but about vision.
