Hotel Arbaso represents the newest addition to the thriving hospitality scene in San Sebastián. Situated on the renowned Hondarribia Kale, this charming destination in Northern Spain remains relatively undiscovered by many, despite its reputation for hosting an exclusive A-list film festival.
The name Arbaso, derived from the Basque language, pays tribute to the region’s rich heritage. The hotel is housed in an 18th-century building adjacent to the neo-Gothic El Buen Pastor Cathedral, which was constructed just two decades earlier. Its neoclassical-style façade, crafted from ashlar stone and adorned with balustrades, distinguishes it from its surroundings.
The combination of grey woodwork and warm orange sandstone tones reflects the architectural style prevalent in the early 20th century. The interiors of Arbaso exude tranquility and serenity, mirroring the picturesque Concha Bay of San Sebastián. Local Fiark Architecture Studio designed the rooms and suites based on the principles of feng shui.
The accommodations range from cozy duplexes with fireplaces to spacious suites with high ceilings and views of the neighborhood. Elements such as linen curtains, oak floors, leather headboards, and palm fiber carpets evoke the simplicity and refined taste synonymous with Basque culture.
One of the standout features of Hotel Arbaso is its exceptional collection of furniture by renowned designers, including a Boho sofa by Maison de Vacances, a Remos chair by Cuerum, a Cesta floor lamp by Miguel Milá, and two table lamps by Matteo Nunziati.
The areas also exhibit furnishings that honor the Basque legacy, including bedside tables influenced by the cylindrical stones typically lifted by the stone lifters of the region. Additionally, the wardrobes are skillfully crafted from marble, wood, and leather by the skilled artisans of Arkaia.
