Hou De Sousa Designs Fluorescent Atomic Installation For Georgetown

Atomic Installation, Georgetown, USA / Hou de Sousa

Hou de Sousa

Fluorescent hula hoops and fishnet fabric form this sculptural installation, which American firm Hou de Sousa has suspended over the lawn of Grace Church in Georgetown, Washington DC. As its name suggests, Atomic is an ode to the tiny particles that shape our universe, filling an otherwise infinite vacuum with energy, gravity, variety, and light.

The iridescent canopy is a physical manifestation of the bokeh effect, a phenomena that occurs when points of light are photographed out of focus. The project’s multi-hued facets also establish a contextual link with the stained-glass windows of Grace Church.

Atomic is part of Georgetown GLOW, an annual light art festival, and will be on display between December 5, 2019, and January 5, 2020. Hou de Sousa previously exhibited a piece during the 2018-19 season titled “Prismatic”.
