Bentley Motors has flung open the doors of its brand-new design studio with a statement piece: the EXP 15 luxury vision concept. This audacious five-metre-plus physical model isn’t destined for production lines, but it powerfully articulates Bentley’s design vision for the future, masterfully weaving threads from its illustrious early 20th-century Grand Tourer heritage into a thoroughly modern, electrified tapestry.
Visually, the EXP 15 immediately evokes the spirit of legends like the 1930 Bentley Speed Six Gurney Nutting Sportsman coupe – the iconic “Blue Train” Bentley. Think the commanding upright grille, the dramatically long ‘endless’ bonnet line, and the characteristically rearward cabin. This homage recalls Woolf Barnato’s legendary race against Le Train Bleu, a tale embedded in Bentley lore. Yet, this is no retro pastiche. The concept explodes into the 21st century with ultra-modern exterior surfacing, intricate high-tech lighting details, and active aerodynamic elements. Crucially, the EXP 15 provides tantalising hints towards the design language of future Bentleys, including the marque’s imminent first fully electric car.

Muscular forms define the EXP 15’s imposing presence, embodying Bentley’s crystallised exterior design principles. The bodywork exhibits ‘Monolithic Presence’, evoking elements hewn from solid stone, while ‘Muscular Form’ crafts tensioned surfaces that visually telegraph latent power. ‘Carved Precision’ complements this, ensuring sharp definition and visual lightness without sacrificing the essential Bentley solidity.

Supporting these sculptural qualities are five core tenets shaping the concept’s iconic silhouette. Upright Elegance establishes the front profile with a gently curved vertical line, akin to a confident thoroughbred horse. Dominating the face is the Iconic Grille, reimagined as illuminated “digital art” for the electric era yet retaining its defining vertical spine and central command. Sweeping rearward is the Endless Bonnet Line – a continuous arc from nose to rear pillar nodding to combustion heritage; beneath it, space liberated by electrification houses elegant storage accessed via twin panels inspired by the Gurney Nutting coupe’s piano hinges. The profile reveals the Resting Beast principle, marked by powerful rear haunches swelling above the wheels to express energy within a perfectly proportioned, relaxed stance (one-third cabin, two-thirds body).

Completing the visual narrative is the Prestigious Shield principle governing the rear. This presents a large, uncluttered surface seamlessly integrated into the tailgate. Here, the winged Bentley emblem sits with pride, meticulously framed by intricate diamond-patterned rear lights, cementing the concept’s stance of assertive elegance.

The futuristic cabin is equally revolutionary, conceived using virtual reality (VR) software to explore myriad configurations. Departing radically from convention, it features an innovative three-seat layoutwith three doors – a single driver’s door and dramatic twin upward-opening coach doors on the passenger side. This configuration prioritises luxury in transit for fewer occupants and includes clever in-cabin storage solutions for pets or luggage, accessible without stopping. The passenger seat is a marvel of flexibility, rotating 45 degrees for dignified egress, sliding between ‘Co-pilot’, ‘Standard’, and ‘Relax’ positions, and freeing up space for the unique Concertina Floor Storage.

Material choices showcase a meticulous blend of tradition and innovation. Sustainable materials like a 100% Fox Brothers wool textile in a damson ombre effect nestle alongside lightweight 3D-printed titanium finishes. Gainsborough silk jacquard promotes well-being, while ‘Acrylic Couture’ metal mesh creates radiant 3D effects. The user experience (UX) is paramount, aiming for an intelligent fusion of conductor and chef.

Central to the cabin experience is the fifth interior principle: ‘Magical Fusion’. This philosophy blends physical and digital elements seamlessly. The full-width ‘Wing Gesture’ dashboard can transform from a comprehensive digital interface into a serene wood veneer surface. At its heart lies the ‘Mechanical Marvel’ – a captivating clock-like device with illuminated fingers indicating navigation, charge state, or simply offering a mesmerising focal point. “We think people are pining for physical mechanical elements alongside digital,” says Design Director Robin Page. “Combining them offers the best of both worlds.”

The exterior Pallas Gold paint is a material innovation itself. This liquid metal satin finish uses an ultra-thin aluminium pigment allowing radar transmission for safety systems and high reflectivity for Lidar compatibility, essential for autonomous driving environments.

While conceived with a fully-electric, all-wheel-drive powertrain offering long range and fast charging befitting a 21st century Grand Tourer, EXP 15 remains a design beacon. It’s not a preview of the 2026 electric Bentley, but a bold exploration. It takes inspiration from the Speed Six Gurney Nutting coupe not through mimicry, but by channelling its spirit of adventure and luxury into a radically contemporary form. The EXP 15 concept car showcases Bentley’s confident stride into an electric future, where heritage is not a restraint, but a powerful catalyst for sustainable luxury and breathtaking innovation.
