Located in the heart of Kensington, London, Ember Locke is a luxurious aparthotel that boasts 121 boudoir-style apartment rooms. The property is a result of a collaboration between two renowned interior design studios, Atelier Ochre and House of Dré, who have created a vibrant and glamorous atmosphere that is sure to impress guests. In addition to the stunning rooms, Ember Locke also offers a variety of front of house amenities, including a bar, restaurant, bakery, lounge, and gardens, making it the perfect destination for travelers looking for a truly unforgettable experience.
The interiors have been carefully designed to resemble retro boudoir rooms, featuring vibrant colors, luxurious materials, striking patterns, and Art Deco elements. This design concept pays homage to the golden era of Kensington while also incorporating a contemporary touch that caters to the preferences of modern travelers.
The rooms exude a captivating ambiance through the use of impactful textures and tones, which contribute to the overall immersive experience. Noteworthy design elements include sweeping rolled banquette seating, deconstructed wardrobes, and retro fittings, all of which add character and charm to the space.
To create a sophisticated atmosphere, the apartment rooms incorporate glamorous elements such as brass detailing, fringes, tassels, heavy dividing curtains, and carefully curated artwork. Each space is thoughtfully curated with a mix of character pieces, bold pattern fabrics, meticulously crafted furniture, and elegant rattan structures.
The design concept draws inspiration from both the hedonistic ambiance of the now-defunct Kensington Roof Gardens and the casual flamboyance of the iconic 1960s Kensington brand, Biba. By combining various styles and references through a retrofuturist lens, the result is a whimsical and nostalgic reimagination of the glamorous essence of West London.
As the aparthotel is a conversion from a traditional hotel, one practical consideration was the planning of new kitchens within the existing hotel rooms. In order to ensure a comfortable guest experience while providing the functionality of a full kitchen, innovative approaches to layout and space planning were implemented in the majority of the rooms.
The furniture’s geometry is meticulously refined and tailored to each specific condition. A dividing curtain separates the kitchen area from the sleeping space, creating a dynamic environment suitable for various occasions. Bedside tables are seamlessly integrated into the bed design, maximizing functionality within the limited space. The wardrobe is open and multifunctional, serving as a surface for display or work, and featuring a pivoting mirror with storage space for an ironing board at the rear.
