Created by media design studio ENESS, JEM is a large-scale public artwork is ever-changing and responds to its visitors, sensing their presence via a 360° laser tracking system (Lidar). The interactive installation features comfy crochet hammocks and responds with an ever-changing musical and visual symphony whenever sensing someone’s presence. “JEM is there to unify people through a shared experience,” explains the design team. “Our aim is to create a place for people to rest, dream and play together in this rare space.”
Commissioned by South Bank Corporation, the sculpture is located in Brisbane, Australia as part of a newly revitalized area of South Bank titled ‘Flowstate’ an open-air communal gathering art space. ENESS has developed and built almost every component of the installation, including software that translates peoples’ location in real-time into generative dual and audio outcome.
“Technology aside, sitting in the heart of JEM’s innovative self is how she provides a new type of space for people to experience and explore in the public,” adds the studio. “Unlike a playground or an outdoor cinema, JEM defines a new play space of the future.”
