The area surrounding Quinta das Oliveiras is characterized by its sparse population and scattered houses originally built for foresters or farmers. The property itself includes a small cultivation area, a pine forest, and a collection of buildings with modest construction quality – a house and a few support sheds. However, with a vision to transform this space into a contemporary oasis, José Adrião Arquitectos embarked on a project that would redefine the concept of rural living.

When designing Quinta das Oliveiras, Adrião faced the challenge of adhering to strict territorial management rules that dictated the parameters of the project. Existing buildings could only be demolished and replaced, with new construction required to maintain the same footprint as the previous structures. However, Adrião found creative ways to work within these limitations, ultimately creating a home that seamlessly integrated into its surroundings while offering a modern and comfortable living space.

The interior of the house was thoughtfully designed to maximize natural light and ventilation, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere throughout. The living spaces were carefully planned to establish a strong connection with the outdoors, with two distinct volumes comprising the main areas of the house.

A long, low volume houses the kitchen, dining area, and living space in an open layout, while a separate, higher cubic volume contains the staircase leading to the bedrooms on the upper floor and a support zone in the basement.

Adrião’s vision for Quinta das Oliveiras showcases a harmonious blend of contemporary architecture and traditional rural living. The house stands as a testament to the seamless integration of modern design principles with the natural landscape, offering its residents a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
