THE UNSEEN’s headdress that changes color depending on brain activity

London-based artist Lauren Bowker of The Unseen labs in collaboration with Swarovski has developed a gemstone headdress that changes color in response to brain activity. Over 4000 Swarovski Black Spinel stone were chosen and cloned for their material composition — being similar to that found in the human bone — and coated with Bowker’s ‘Magick’ color-changing ink.

“This parallel makes the gemstone compatible with the human, enabling each stone when worn to act as a conduction insulator, absorbing energy loss from the head,” explains Bowker. “We discovered the pattern formation in the color of each stones evolves throughout the day; this fluctuates over areas of the brain in use. When worn the headpiece becomes a reflection of the inner human thought,” she adds.

The Unseen Magick ink enables the Spinel to visualise this energy loss with a colour change gradient, through black to orange, red to green, and blue to purple. The piece will be displayed during London Fashion Week this September.
