Destudio‘s renovation of a unique property in the heart of Valencia, aptly named “Curved Attic,” is a masterclass in maximizing space and prioritizing breathtaking views. Situated with privileged vistas overlooking the old Turia riverbed, the building’s distinctive circular envelope became the defining characteristic of the project, dictating the design’s core concept: framing and celebrating the panoramic scenery.

The studio explains that the initial goal was to clear the house’s interior to provide views of the outside from nearly every angle. This meant placing the main living areas—like the day zone, kitchen, and master bedroom—along the façade to take advantage of the beauty of the Turia.

A key change was removing an existing mezzanine that had limited the living space. This significant alteration revealed a double-height area, highlighting the building’s sloping roof and enhancing the feeling of openness and grandeur.

The connection to the outdoors goes beyond just having a view. Destudio cleverly merged the indoor and outdoor spaces by extending the living area onto the terrace. This outdoor space is designed to be as functional as the interior, featuring areas for dining and lounging, a solarium that reflects the bedroom, an outdoor bath for relaxation, and an open kitchen that connects with the indoor kitchen.

This connection is made even stronger by a hidden window that, when opened, effectively doubles the kitchen’s surface area. This design creates a cohesive space for cooking and socializing, blending the indoor and outdoor experiences seamlessly.

A striking feature of the Curved Attic is the spiral staircase that links the main floor entrance hall to the upper level, which is used less often. This upper level includes a study, reading room, and guest bedroom. The staircase is not just functional; it serves as a sculptural statement. Its large, curved black iron surfaces wrap around natural wood steps, making it a dramatic and elegant focal point that welcomes visitors.

The material choices made by Destudio enhance the project’s main theme: highlighting the views of the Turia. The interior serves as a neutral backdrop, ensuring that nothing distracts from the beautiful scenery outside. The sloping ceiling is covered in natural wood, giving a warm, cabin-like feel, while the walls are finished with soft-toned mortar, promoting a calm atmosphere that allows for uninterrupted enjoyment of the Valencian landscape.

In the Curved Attic, Destudio has done more than just renovate a property; they have created an experience. By focusing on the connection to the surrounding environment and using thoughtful design solutions, they have built a home that is both visually stunning and deeply tied to its unique context.

The result is a space where the curves of the architecture and the flow of the Turia come together, creating an exceptional living environment.
