In the heart of Viseu, Portugal, on the historic Rua da Vitória, Floret Arquitectura has completed a compelling transformation through the sensitive rehabilitation of a building burdened by a dramatic past. The project, known as Apartamentos Vitória, stands as a compelling example of how architectural intervention can breathe new life into a structure, respecting its historical roots while adapting it for contemporary living.
The building, scarred by a devastating fire, presented a unique challenge. The architects faced the task of not only restoring a physically damaged structure but also preserving the intangible essence of its heritage. The exterior, a canvas of Viseu’s architectural history, was meticulously preserved. The vibrant tiles that narrate the street’s story were carefully restored, as were the intricate window frames that define the building’s character. The robust granite elements, a signature of traditional Portuguese construction, were also given the attention they deserved, ensuring the building retained its authentic charm.
The original function of the building as collective housing was maintained, but with a contemporary twist. The architects ingeniously extended the upper floors and rehabilitated the roof, utilizing the attic space to create new apartments. This expansion resulted in ten thoughtfully designed units: nine compact yet comfortable studios and one-bedroom apartments, and a spacious three-bedroom residence. The ground floor, maintaining its commercial function, ensures the building remains an active part of the streetscape.
The fire’s destructive force necessitated a complete interior reconstruction. This presented an opportunity to reimagine the internal spaces, particularly crucial given the compact size of many of the apartments. Floret Arquitectura’s solution focused on creating versatile and optimized layouts, where interior design played a pivotal role in maximizing usability.
A contemporary design language was employed, with custom-designed furniture pieces tailored to each apartment. These bespoke solutions prioritize both functionality and aesthetic appeal, ensuring that every square meter is utilized efficiently without compromising on style. The attention to detail is evident in every element, from the integrated storage solutions to the carefully selected finishes, creating a harmonious blend of historical charm and modern comfort.
The project demonstrates a profound understanding of the delicate balance between preservation and innovation. By honoring the building’s historical legacy while introducing contemporary design solutions, Floret Arquitectura has created a space that resonates with both the past and the present. Apartamentos Vitória stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful rehabilitation, contributing to the revitalization of Viseu’s historic urban fabric and fostering a more vibrant and livable city. The building, like a phoenix rising from ashes, is a powerful example of how architecture can bridge the gap between generations, offering a glimpse into the past while embracing the future.
