Dome, the newest culinary venture at Desa Potato Head Seminyak in Bali, crafted by OMA, invites guests into a vibrant retro-futurist setting enriched with eco-friendly design elements. Paying homage to Buckminster Fuller’s Dome Home, this all-day restaurant and wine bar serves up a delightful array of casual yet sophisticated dishes, all made from locally sourced ingredients.
The menu, curated by Chef Diego Recart, showcases a contemporary twist on cuisine influenced by his experiences in South American and European kitchens. The dining experience emphasizes fresh produce from organic farmers and local suppliers, while the bar features a selection of thoughtfully produced wines, including natural, organic, and biodynamic varieties.
In designing the Dome interior at Desa Potato Head Bali, the OMA team reimagines ancient cisterns, blending traditional forms with modern local materials and construction methods. The striking blue epoxy floor mirrors the essence of water found in a cistern, while the coordinated blue hues of the fixtures and furnishings enhance the immersive quality of the environment.
The design harmonizes futuristic and earthy elements, highlighted by a central circular bar with a sleek metal surface, stainless steel monoliths that house JBL 4355 speakers and a DJ setup, alongside contrasting Indonesian tribal sculptures, such as those from the Asmat tribe. Custom-designed pieces include OMA-crafted fixtures and unique lounge chairs created by Potato Head’s in-house design team.
“The architecture is incredibly futuristic, so we aimed to soften it with natural elements,” shares Isaac Larose, Creative Director of Desa Potato Head. “If you observe closely, you’ll notice the unique imperfections in the reclaimed furniture. We chose to embrace these flaws rather than conceal them, much like our approach to wines and produce.”
The Dome’s hybrid aesthetic is a celebration of sustainable design, featuring reclaimed wood and thoughtfully chosen furniture that exudes warmth, alongside antique rugs that create a cozy atmosphere. Staff members don upcycled cotton uniforms, embodying the commitment to eco-friendliness. On a broader scale, the culinary approach not only minimizes landfill waste but also weaves regeneration into its food sourcing practices.
Enhancing the diverse dining experience is a community-centric layout, highlighted by a spacious social area beneath the Dome’s skylight, designed to foster connection and creativity, complemented by a curated selection of books on architecture, design, art, food, and wellness from Wild Life Archive.
The Dome serves as an all-day dining destination where relationships flourish, work gets accomplished, and accessible events unfold. Its immersive environment invites visitors to engage deeply with one another, sparking new connections. The skylight above the communal space seamlessly links to the vibrant Potato Head Studios, a hub for various cultural happenings.
As OMA’s Managing Partner – Architect David Gianotten notes, the atmosphere is designed for interaction. Dinner is available to guests from 6 PM to 11 PM, Wednesday through Sunday, at Desa Potato Head Bali, while the café library welcomes visitors daily from 9 AM to 6 PM.
